Ectopic pregnancy is not a normal pregnancy. In ectopic pregnancy, the fertilized egg does not implant in the uterus, but in the outside tissues. In most cases, it implants in the fallopian tube.

Chances of ectopic pregnancy increases with age, fallopian tube surgery, or pelvic inflammatory disease, however a vaginal ultrasound and scan or ELISA (urinary test) can successfully diagnose it.

Although, ectopic pregnancy needs immediate medical attention, death is rare in such condition, since early detection in first trimester of the pregnancy period is possible for it. After detection, treatment can be done with injection methotrexate, or laprosopic or laprotomy surgery.

Monitoring Symptoms

There are different symptoms for ectopic pregnancy. Woman with an ectopic pregnancy at times have abdominal or pelvic pain, dizziness, low blood pressure, and vaginal bleeding. Hormones levels of the pregnant woman need to be checked, if you suspect an ectopic pregnancy.

The hormone HCG is higher in a normal pregnancy in comparison to ectopic pregnancy. However, the progesterone hormone tends to be lower. To monitor the hormone levels, doctors ask the patients to get their blood tests done on a daily basis for a few days. To check internal bleeding an ultrasound is also advised by the doctors.

Treatment

Good news is that ectopic pregnancy can be treated without any permanent damage, but sometimes in advanced pregnancies, it may rupture. Then doctors perform surgery. Surgery can be done using laprotomy (open surgery) or laproscopy (pin hole surgery), depending on the size of the ectopic pregnancy. Earlier, doctors used to remove the entire fallopian tube while removing ectopic pregnancy, now only a part of the fallopian tube is removed.

Prevention

Ectopic pregnancy can surely be treated, but there is no known way to prevent it. One can decrease the risk by using condoms or getting pelvis area checked in case of any urinary tract infection. Yearly medical examinations are necessary, if you use an IUD.

Any infection during pregnancy can be quite troubling for the mother as well for the child. Ectopic pregnancy should be detected and removed as early as the first trimester when you are experiencing your first signs of pregnancy. Ignoring the symptoms of pregnancy week by week can lead to trouble in the later stages. Remember to get a thorough medical checkup done in the first few weeks of your pregnancy itself. Be informed, keep safe, and enjoy your journey to motherhood.

Consult your doctor to confirm you pregnancy when you start to experience the early signs of pregnancy. During the first trimester of the pregnancy period itself the doctor can detect an ectopic pregnancy with your pregnancy week by week symptoms.

So you fixed the baby’s room, decorated it with cool baby stuffs, assembled the crib, bought a baby mobile and packed enough photo and video equipment to document the arrival of the little angel in you and your wife’s life. But then first time dads will often wonder, what would I do if the baby is really now coming home? Will you be willing to pick up the baby when he cries? Changed his diaper when it’s soaked? I guess the said task are no longer a choice of whether you will do it or not but rather it is now a tasked incorporated in your title as the head of the family and being the partner of your wife.

In order that first time daddies would not be lost in translation and in the oblivion of how to’s let me share some few pointer in taking care of that little angel.

First of all, it will all begin with the search and meeting the baby’s pediatrician. Such task should be done even before the baby is born so that you can start establishing a good relationship with the pediatrician. Through thorough consultations, identifying high risk situations in your wife’s pregnancy will be known and thus, it will be easier for the first time fathers to handle the situation.

Secondly, during the birth of your angel, do not fret over uneven color spots on the skin, the funny looking head with soft spots and the puffy eyes. They are all normal. There is no need to be alarmed inasmuch as the baby will soon transformed into that perfect angel looking kid that you and your partner dreamed of.

Thirdly, first time daddies should remember that picking up baby is not a hard thing to do. One of my friends told me that her husband never picks up the baby because her husband is too scared that he may broke the baby’s neck or bones. Holding the baby is like holding a sack of potato. You just have to make sure that the baby’s head and neck are supported. In that way no breaking of the bones, necks or other parts of the body is done. There is one more important thing, never shake the baby. That’s it, easy.

Fourth, the biggest dilemma of all: the choice of whether you will use cloth or disposable diapers. Well the answer is really up to you, but when counting costs, you may also consider the water and the soap that you will need to wash those clothes. Expert says that the best choice is to choose both, combine and alternate using disposable and cloth diapers to let the baby’s bottom breathe after being covered with an elastic material for hours. Diaper rash however may be seen if the baby’s sensitive skin is constantly soaked with wetness from his urine and dirt from the baby’s stool, adding more is the heat from the diaper. Thus, in order to prevent diaper rash, a father who is in charge has to clean the area very well with mild soap and water and drying them up first before changing the diaper. Anti-diaper rash cream may also be used.

Remember that these are the most common dilemmas in fatherhood when it comes to taking care of his new born child. Expect a lot more though. But never fret and take each day at a time. Consider them as happy activities, activities that will surely help you and your partner in life grow together.

Boston, MA (PRWEB) June 22, 2006

According to recent findings by Statistics Canada, approximately half of all Canadian women of childbearing age are considered overweight or obese. While women are advised to lose excess weight before conceiving, North American researchers confirm that rising overweight/obesity rates among pregnant women mirror that of the general population. In other words, many Canadian women are entering pregnancy far from their ideal weight.

What can “plus-size” moms-to-be expect when they are expecting? According to Dr. Cornelia van der Ziel, Harvard Medical School clinical instructor in obstetrics and gynecology, “overweight and obese women, as a group, are at higher risk for developing complications such as gestational diabetes and gestational hypertension.” Studies also point to higher cesarean section rates and a greater likelihood to deliver a high birthweight baby. Van der Ziel also finds that, “What happens during an individual plus-size woman’s pregnancy is based largely on her personal health choices and previous medical history. If a woman is generally healthy before becoming pregnant, carefully monitors diet and exercise, and actively participates in her prenatal care, she is more likely to have a healthy pregnancy.”

Van der Ziel, along with Jacqueline Tourville, a childbirth educator and plus-size mom, are the co-authors of BIG, BEAUTIFUL AND PREGNANT: EXPERT ADVICE AND COMFORTING WISDOM FOR THE EXPECTING PLUS-SIZE WOMAN, a new release from Marlowe/Avalon Publishing Group. Because a woman’s ability to learn about pregnancy and childbirth is critical to taking good care of herself and her unborn baby, the pair decided it was finally time to offer the plus-size population a friendly, medically sound guide delivering the skinny on what to expect from pregnancy, birth, and beyond.

Based in part on countless conversations van der Ziel has had over the years with her overweight and obese patients, as well as Tourville’s firsthand experiences, BIG, BEAUTIFUL AND PREGNANT addresses plus-size women’s most pressing prenatal concerns, including: Is my pregnancy doomed to encounter complications because I’m overweight? How can I find a sympathetic prenatal care provider? How much weight should I gain? Why am I being tested for gestational diabetes? Will my baby be big because of my size? Where can I find trendy plus-size maternity clothes? After my baby is born, what can I do to give my child the healthiest possible start in life?

The authors hope the book provides plus-size women with information, inspiration, and reassurance that they can have a healthy and happy pregnancy. Ann Douglas, author of the best-selling MOTHER OF ALL PREGNANCY BOOKS, says, “BIG, BEAUTIFUL AND PREGNANT will leave you feeling confident, sexy, and informed for nine months and beyond.” Pioneering midwife, Ina May Gaskin, adds, “It’s understanding and understandable, positive and inspiring and always a source of information that’s often hard to find elsewhere.” And, as a sign plus-size pregnancy has achieved prominent health issue status, the LIBRARY JOUNRAL, in a recent starred review, calls BIG, BEAUTIFUL AND PREGNANT, “an important addition to… [consumer health] literature.”

But, you may adopt some tactics to reduce its discomforts now, in the first trimester of pregnancy. What Leads To Morning Sickness

Despite bundle of joy the pregnancy morning sickness points out to, the women who are planning to get pregnant, it is also a source of discouraging feelings to food and different fragrances. During the second trimester, visits to the doctor must be regularized. The physician may check certain things depending on your medical condition and the state of the fetus. These tests would generally include current symptoms and discomforts if any, the weight of the mother, blood pressure, urine, growth and development of the fetus, size of the uterus since by now it is supposed to be felt through the abdominal wall, height of the fundus, and the heartbeat of the fetus. The second trimester is like a turning point for both the mother and the baby. The mother has by now gotten used to the symptoms of pregnancy and can handle it better; she also begins to show the symptoms more evidently on the exterior. The fetus too has developed organs by now but now they will start growing in size and work towards becoming a system.

The umbilical cord keeps growing thicker in this period as it will be the connecting cord between the mother and the baby. Just like food everything that the mother consumes is carried to the fetus via the umbilical cord so if the mother is a smoker or an alcoholic or drug abuser it is time she has given them up for the best development of her child. It is now that the fetus becomes heavier at least up to another 7 times to ensure that it is healthy and can survive alone outside the uterus. By the end of the second trimester, on an average a fetus is 14 inches long and weighs around two and a half pounds.

The things that the expecting mother will experience are the fetus’ kicking and moving. The fetus will also have developed eyes ears by now and can hear the mother. A white layer appears on the skin to protect the tender baby skin which will gradually disappear as the time approaches for the baby to be delivered. The baby will be able to respond to certain stimulus and also it can suck and swallow now. The placenta has developed completely and the brain will begin to go through massive formation changes from the fifth month. Each finger and toe is clearly distinguishable from the other and nails have also begun to appear on the tips. The unborn baby has already started being awake and asleep for a certain number of hours. The 20th week of pregnancy is only half way through the pregnancy and a baby born this early might survive in a neonatal intensive care unit but that is barely true.

This is the physically most comfortable period for the mother in the duration of pregnancy. Morning sickness, fatigue and tenderness of the breast become far more tolerable now. This is basically because the levels of progesterone and estrogen are getting adjusted in the human body. The mother’s appetite however is increased, can feel movements of the baby, the mother will want to urinate more frequently, nosebleeds also occur in some cases, there is a white coloured discharge from the vagina, pigmentations might develop and there might be slight body aches but all in all this is a relatively comfortable stage as compared to the first and third trimesters.
