The amount and kinds of food you are eating during pregnancy have a direct impact on the development of your baby. Although you often give in to your food cravings, keeping everything healthy and balanced is important in ensuring normal pregnancy. In general, pregnant women need an additional 300 calories to their daily food intake. However, this does not mean simply increasing how much you eat but also considering what you eat. The extra calories you need must come from nutritious foods, so they can contribute to you and your baby’s health.

Understanding Pregnancy Nutrition.

Every day, you need to eat the correct amount and variety of foods to ensure the health of your baby. Healthy eating during pregnancy will give your baby an advantage in growth, brain development, reducing risk of birth defects and strengthening of the immune system.

The rules observed in proper pregnancy nutrition are simple; food variety at food servings.

Every day, you need to have one to two servings of lean protein, such as chicken, pork and lamb. Sea foods are excellent sources of essential food nutrients but caution must be taken as they may contain mercury, which is linked to birth defects. For vegetarians, cheese and beans may fulfill your daily protein requirement.

Pregnant women also need to have their daily intake of green leafy vegetables such as lettuce, cabbage, spinach, kale, mustard greens, turnip greens and collard greens. They also need five servings of whole grains, such as whole grain cereals and oatmeal, which are packed with important vitamins and minerals. They are also great sources of fiber, which are helpful in preventing and relieving constipation. If you turn to wheat breads for your whole grain and fiber requirement, make sure that its label says “100% whole wheat” and not “enriched wheat”.

One good source of iron is the humble potato. Adding iron-rich foods in your diet, three times a week, delivers digestible iron that limits your risk of suffering iron-deficiency, which is linked to pregnancy problems. Also, to complete your daily mineral and vitamin requirement, include at least one serving of fruit in your diet. In either juice or whole fruit form, you can enjoy the natural goodness of fruit fiber and nutrients.

Each day, yellow or orange colored fruits and vegetables such as carrots, squash and yellow bell peppers, must be included as they are excellent sources of beta carotene. Adding two eggs in your daily diet delivers many vitamins and minerals, including healthy cholesterol, which is beneficial to your baby’s brain development. Healthy fats from nut oils, olive oil or avocados are also important sources of good cholesterol.

In addition to this pregnancy nutrition guide, you also need to remain hydrated. Drinking lots of fluids such as water or fruit juices is important in supporting your body’s gradual need to increase blood volume for the baby.

Caution

Pregnant women are advised not to eat foods that are high in vitamin A, such as animal liver, as too much of this vitamin can damage the embryo. Eating unpasteurized cheeses and other products of unpasteurized milk must be avoided to prevent the transmission of infectious bacteria and pathogens, such as listeria, which can cause miscarriage. Similarly, pregnant women must refrain from eating raw meat, or dishes such as sushi, as they may be contaminated with toxins such as mercury and microbes, which can pose serious risks to your baby’s health. But with all these things, don’t forget to take the advice of your doctor.

Normally, people tend to link morning sickness with the early signs of pregnancy. The truth is nausea and vomiting may not only occur during the first trimester of pregnancy but may very well, in certain cases, be experienced in the last trimester of the pregnancy.

During the first trimester of pregnancy, nausea is often caused by the increase in the levels of hormones within the body. Sip water continually to avoid dehydration.

Unluckily, some women have hyperemesis gravidarum (HG), a condition that causes women to suffer from severe morning sickness until their babies are born or even after the birth. HG refers to the nonstop and excessive vomiting that may cause the following:

Weight loss
Dehydration
Sense of taste alterations
Hallucinations
Difficulty in daily activities
Occurrence of diabetes, heart disease or neurobehaviorial issues in the baby

Due to the risk of dehydration and to pregnancy complications, women who have HG must be treated as a medical emergency with antiemetic medications, intravenous re-hydration or nutritional support that may be required.

Different stages of Pregnancy

Following three stages define the physiology changes in the mother during pregnancy.

First trimester (week 1-week 12)
Second trimester (week 13-week 28)
Third trimester (week 29-week 40)

Definition with symptoms in different stages of Pregnancy

First Trimester – It is the most crucial stage and many precautions are to be taken in this stage. During the first stage of pregnancy there are many hormonal changes that occur in different parts of the body. These changes led to some symptoms in the body like stopping of periods which is the basic symptom. Other symptoms are as follows:-

Extreme tiredness
Tender, swollen breasts and nipples might also stick out.
Morning sickness
Cravings or dislike for certain foods
Mood swings
Constipation
Headache
Heartburn
Weight gain or loss
Need to pass urine more often

In the first stage you should change the daily routine in some ways as going to bed earlier or eating frequently or small meals. As the pregnancy progresses the discomforts are automatically go away. The symptoms also depend upon person to person. In fact if you are once pregnant and the second time you will feel different.

Second trimester – some women feels that the second stage is easier than the first one. Symptoms like fatigue and nausea would reduce but some new symptoms develop in this stage. Your abdomen will expand as the baby continues to grow. As the baby grows you will notice the movement of the baby in this stage.

Body aches, back ache, groin, or thigh pain
Stretch marks on your abdomen, breasts, thighs, or buttocks
Darkening of the skin around your nipples
A line on the skin running from belly button to pubic hairline
Patches of darker skin usually over the cheeks, forehead, nose, or upper lip.
Numb or tingling hands, called carpal tunnel syndrome
Itching on the abdomen, palms, and feet.
Swelling of the ankles, fingers, and face.

Third trimester – Symptoms in second and third stage is mostly common. Some of the changes which occur in the third stage are as follows:

Shortness of breath
Heartburn
Hemorrhoids
Tender breasts, which may leak watery pre-milk called colostrum (kuh-LOSS-struhm)
Belly button may stick out
Problems in sleeping
The baby “dropping”, or moving lower in your abdomen
Contractions, which can be a sign of real or false labor

As the due date is near the cervix becomes thinner and soft which is a natural process that help the birth canal open during the birth of the baby.  The third stage is the final count down in the birth of the baby

The US Department of Health and Human Services Office on Women’s Health (OWH) and the DC Breastfeeding Coalition are seeking nominations for the Washington Breastfeeding Friendly Business and Community Awards. Award winners will be recognized at a special awards breakfast co-sponsored by Glamourmom, on January 12, 2006 at the National Museum for Women in the Arts.

Breastfeeding is the best way to feed infants during the first 6 months of life and to reduce infant mortality, childhood illness and obesity. Despite the benefits, Washington, D.C. has the second worst 6-months breastfeeding rates in the country. For many mothers, keeping a breastfeeding routine can be a challenge when out in public or returning to work after maternity leave. According to a national survey conducted this year, nearly half of women are uncomfortable with breastfeeding their baby in a park, store or mall.

The Washington Breastfeeding Friendly Business and Community Awards will recognize leading business and community advocates for their support of breastfeeding mothers. Awards will be given in three categories—Breastfeeding Friendly Business, Breastfeeding Friendly Employer ad Breastfeeding Community Advocate.

Breastfeeding Friendly Business Award

This award will be given to a retail business or public agency that welcomes breastfeeding mothers and/or makes it easy to nurse in their establishment. Businesses may include restaurants, libraries, malls, retail stores, health clubs, museums and other public facilities.

Breastfeeding Friendly Employer Award

This award will recognize an employer that actively supports breastfeeding employees by fostering an environment in the workplace or implementing leave time or other policies that support breastfeeding.

Breastfeeding Advocate Award

The Breastfeeding Advocate award will be given in recognition of an individual who, through their volunteer, educational, advocacy and/or professional efforts, have significantly contributed to the promotion of breastfeeding in the Washington area.

Nominations are due by 5:00 p.m., Wednesday, December 14. Winners will be selected by a respected panel of local health and business professionals. Additional information about the awards including nomination forms is available at www.dcbreastfeeds.org or by calling (202) 742-5933.
