Columbus, Ohio Mother Launches Breastfeeding Advocacy Product Line

Columbus, OH (PRWEB) December 30, 2004

A Columbus, Ohio mother of two has created a new product line enabling moms, dads, babies, and kids Â? and anyone else who is passionate about breastfeeding Â? to promote and support this important healthy start to a babyÂ?s life. MamaÂ?s Milk Tees, found at http://www.mamasmilktees.com on the World Wide Web, provides a wide range of designs on everything from t-shirts, sweatshirts, and baby bibs to mugs, prints, and calendars.

The designs by store owner Anna Swank range from somewhat subtle to in-your-face. Says Swank, Â?I realize that not everyone is as brazen about breastfeeding as I am, but there are also those who are even more outspoken than I am. My line includes products that cater to both ends of the spectrum.Â? Swank goes on to say she created the line primarily out of frustration. Â?After my son was born, I scoured the internet and retail stores for fun shirts that promoted breastfeeding. By the time I had my daughter, I realized that if I wanted to wear such items, I was going to have to create them myself.Â?

Although the initial designs were primarily text and cartoon images, new designs display images of real babies breastfeeding. Many of the photographs used were contributed by women around the world who share SwankÂ?s passion for breastfeeding, and believe that breastmilk is the healthiest food a mother can give her baby.

The US Department of Health and Human Services Office on WomenÂ?s Health recently launched a National Breastfeeding Awareness Campaign to promote breastfeeding. The overall goal of the campaign is to increase the proportion of breastfed newborn babies to 75%, and the proportion of six month old babies to 50% by the year 2010. Swank believes that raising awareness about breastfeeding among the general public is an important step in reaching these goals. Â?For years, bottle-feeding has been the perceived norm among the general population,Â? says Swank. Â?Sadly, many breastfeeding mothers have been relegated to backrooms and dirty bathrooms to feed their babies. I hope that the fun and encouraging messages of my designs will help these mothers feel comfortable feeding their babies wherever they happen to be. After all, itÂ?s not really about a motherÂ?s right to breastfeed. ItÂ?s about a babyÂ?s right to eat.Â?

About MamaÂ?s Milk Tees

MamaÂ?s Milk Tees was founded in December of 2004 by Anna Swank. Anna is the proud mother of two year old Jonny, and 13 month old Gracie, who is currently breastfed. When Anna came up empty-handed in her search for fun breastfeeding advocacy apparel, she decided to create her own, and MamaÂ?s Milk Tees was born.

Let it Flow: Meditation CD Increases MothersÂ? Breastfeeding Success

(PRWEB) June 20, 2004

Breastfeeding mothers who are worried about producing enough milk for their babies will now be able to relax and increase their flow of breast milk, thanks to Sheri MenelliÂ?s new Breastfeeding Meditation CD.

New mothers often stop nursing because theyÂ?re concerned that their babies might not be getting enough milk. Anxiety, fatigue and stress also tend to inhibit milk production. Pumping milk is especially stressful for mothers who give birth prematurely and must pump their milk during their babiesÂ? long hospital stays.

Sheri Menelli, a certified hypnotherapist in Carlsbad, California, developed her Breastfeeding Meditation CD after working with several clients who were having trouble producing enough milk due to stress. Â?My mission is to help as many lactating mothers and their babies as I can,Â? Menelli says. Her CD provides affirmations and guided meditations that help nursing mothers lower their stress levels, produce more breast milk, and bond with their babies. It is so relaxing that it comes with a warning that listeners should not listen to this CD while driving.

The Breastfeeding Meditation CD is being used around the country to help mothers of premature infants increase their milk flow by as much as 300%. It is also beneficial for employed mothers. Â?Moms who must rely on pumping milk because they are working find that the pumps just arenÂ?t as efficient as the baby at releasing that milk. The visualizations in this CD have proven to be very powerful for those moms,Â? says Menelli.

Breastfeeding Meditation has been endorsed by numerous lactation specialists, nurses, and nursing mothers. Â?I will recommend this CD to ALL my clients,Â? says Marsha Perryman, lactation consultant and NICU staff nurse at St. Alexius Medical Center in Hoffman Estates, IL Â?In the fast-paced world we live in, it is no wonder that mothers find it difficult to relax and enjoy the breastfeeding experience.

Breastfeeding Meditation not only helps mothers to relax but also encourages good health practices and attitudes.Â?

This CD costs $ 15.95. It is available through http://www.menelli.com and http://www.amazon.com, or by calling (760) 431-2228.

Breastfeeding? There is Finally a Product on the Market that Lets You Breastfeed in Private, in Public

Houston, TX (PRWEB) January 17, 2011

There have been attempts to make ‘the perfect’ breastfeeding garment over many years. For whatever reason, no one has been able to design a garment that covers all of the breastfeeding mother’s concerns. With the sudden rise of hospitals going to breastfeeding as opposed to formula feeding, the need for a garment that puts mothers’ worries to rest is in great demand. Mrs. Helen Clark, President of ECH International and mother of three, saw the need and invented The Baby CUB. “I designed The Baby CUB in support of breastfeeding mothers all over the country with the intention of giving full and complete privacy and ease while nursing. The Baby CUB is a brand new garment. It is hand crafted for nursing moms all over the country.”

“Breastfeeding in public can be awkward. I can’t tell you how many times I have seen moms struggle with trying to keep their baby and themselves covered while breastfeeding. Baby blankets slip off and mom keeps covering up her baby constantly, disturbing the child. I wanted to design a garment that would help in every aspect of breastfeeding…” She has designed The Baby CUB with the many advantages that other garments do not have. The Baby CUB slips over the head and can be size adjusted at both shoulders. The two hand openings enable the mother to use her free hand to read a book, enjoy a cup of coffee or use her cell phone, without fear of exposure. According to Mrs. Clark and her design team, “Working mothers will benefit from The Baby CUB if it is necessary to express during working hours. The breast shields and tubing conveniently pass through the hand openings.” She also adds “…if the pump is a hands-free design, the hand openings allow both hands to be used normally….”

The Baby CUB is available in a hospital version, along with a custom version. According to Mrs. Clark, “initially, we intended The Baby CUB to be just a hospital garment. I asked myself why limit it to hospitals? The fabric for the hospital version is an easy care Ultima Poplin and, hopefully, it will be in hospitals all over the country. With our custom version, we offer Seersucker fabric and will expand to a wider range of fabrics if the public has a demand for it.” Great attention has been paid to tailoring to last through many cycles of washing. The places where The Baby CUB will come in handy are limitless. Airports and airplanes, shopping malls, at the movies, visiting friends, at work, in your favorite restaurant…take it wherever you go! It folds up into a size where any diaper bag can store it with ease.

Another major aspect of The Baby CUB, is that Mrs. Clark refused to outsource the manufacturing of The Baby CUB. “We wanted to keep the process, from start to finish, here in the U.S.A. to keep control over manufacturing quality and delivery time. We found a company in The Dalles, Oregon, that is well established. With so many of today’s garments being made outside the U.S., we wanted to give an American company the job. It is a garment made here in the States and I could not be more proud of that fact.”

For more information about The Baby CUB, visit http://www.thebabycub.com. ECH International President and Owner, Helen Clark, can be reached at 713-898-9849.

Lactnet Empowers the Frontlines of Breastfeeding Education, One Email at a Time

Bethesda, MD (PRWEB) October 20, 2006

Lactnet – a unique Internet community providing up-to-the-minute information and ongoing support to breastfeeding educators worldwide – has won the grand prize in L-Soft’s 2005-2006 LISTSERV® Choice Awards program, the only global recognition program for email list excellence.

Lactnet is a forum for cutting-edge information, discussion and support focusing on best practices, emerging thoughts and current research. Lactnet has approximately 3,500 subscribers from 38 countries, covering every continent except Antarctica. It is designed for lactation consultants and others – such as lay breastfeeding counselors, nurses, doctors, midwives, public health advocates, pharmacologists, marketing experts, writers, journalists, scientists, dieticians and doulas – involved in providing support to mothers in breastfeeding their infants and young children.

Breastfeeding has moved closer to the forefront of media and public attention in recent months, with significant World Breastfeeding Week coverage over the summer, including, in the United States, a controversial “Baby Talk” magazine cover featuring a close-up of a baby at the breast. Virtually all major government agencies and medical organizations worldwide – including the World Heath Organization, UNICEF, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the American Academy of Pediatrics – have spoken out clearly in support of breastfeeding as the optimal source of infant nutrition and nurturing as well as a significant contributor to maternal health. Numerous U.S. government initiatives are underway to increase breastfeeding rates, particularly among low-income and minority communities.

“Lactnet is an extraordinary Internet community, unique in the way it uses an email discussion list alone to bring together so many different types of individuals, all with the same goal of promoting breastfeeding. Lactnet receives the top LISTSERV Choice Award for being a shining example how a simple use of technology can be so powerful, resulting in a wave of positive outcomes for mothers and babies worldwide,” Eric Thomas, L-Soft Founder and CEO, said. “On Lactnet, thousands of lactation professionals and other supporters become virtual colleagues – all within the reach of a single email message – and join together to help breastfeeding mothers and enhance maternal-child health.”

Kathleen Bruce, Lactnet co-founder, stated: “Breastfeeding is a woman’s right all over the world. Lactnet makes the world a little smaller, in that a lactation consultant in rural Tennessee can now communicate with a lactation consultant in Zimbabwe, or Oslo, or Sydney, or any of the 50 states in the U.S., or elsewhere in Europe, and so on. Physicians are available to communicate with lactation professionals, and current knowledge and ideas are shared on a global level. Everyone on the list is interested in supporting breastfeeding mothers and babies based on the latest evidence-based information. The commonalities across the field of breastfeeding management help increase the incidence of breastfeeding, making it a universal language of mothering,” adding “Lactnet helps mothers and children everywhere by helping their breastfeeding professionals.”

Launched in 1995 by Bruce, a Vermont nurse, International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) and La Leche League Leader, and well-known author and lactation consultant Kathleen Auerbach, PhD, IBCLC, Lactnet creates a network of support for isolated lactation consultants who lack the benefit of local peers. It is now led by Bruce and five co-facilitators or “listmothers” across the United States, Australia and Europe.

The geographic divisions between members are bridged by LISTSERV email list technology and turned into benefits with tangible results, such as a global knowledge base. Lactnet has helped mothers with dire breastfeeding problems in such widespread locations as the countries of Georgia, Taiwan and Honduras. Bruce cites examples, including one in which a subscriber’s own child had suffered from chylothorax, a rare, life-threatening complication following heart surgery as a newborn. This made it impossible for him to consume fat. The subscriber was allowed to post about the case although it was her own child because the situation was so rare that it was unlikely most practitioners would ever see it themselves, and the listmothers wanted the information from the case to be freely available online so others could have their lives saved as this child did, through the efforts of his mother, who developed a method for removing the fat from her own expressed milk.

Far more common is the exchange of techniques and practices that can help the majority of mothers in overcoming more everyday challenges involved in breastfeeding. One example is Reverse Pressure Softening, or RPS, a simple technique to relieve breast engorgement in the first week after baby’s birth, which has quickly spread throughout the subscribers on the list because it is easily described, simple to use, and seems to be more effective than anything else currently in use.

In addition to active daily list postings and discussions, Lactnet utilizes digests to provide scientific and practical information in a user-friendly format on a wide range of topics that are important to lactation professionals. Lactnet also offers public list archives that provide members as well as the general public with an online compendium of the list’s lively discussions, which span the areas of difficult breastfeeding problems; ethical issues; information on newly published articles, books or research; controversial issues; networking; and emotional and informational support among members. Lactnet runs on L-Soft’s hosted email list service, powered by LISTSERV, the email list solution that launched the industry in 1986.

Bruce notes: “LISTSERV software makes it easy to connect people who are far flung, making us a community of members who are very close, but who have never met altogether in one room!”

Bosom Buddies Rewards Donations in World Breastfeeding Week Celebration

Denver, Colorado (PRWEB) August 2, 2008 -to-

mother support in mind, Bosom Buddies is celebrating the event with an invitation to all women to donate their clean, gently used nursing bras for women in need. To add to the fun, Bosom Buddies is adding Bronze, Silver and Gold level discounts on purchases to those who donate bras.

Women’s breast size changes more during pregnancy and breastfeeding than any other time in life. Being able to have good fitting bras during that time is an extra strain for women already struggling financially. The bras donated by moms no longer breastfeeding, or the bras that just don’t fit any more, will make another mom’s breastfeeding experience that much easier

To add to the celebration, Bosom Buddies will give a discount on any bras purchased at the time of donation: Bronze Discount of 10% off when 1 bra is donated; Silver Discount of 15% off when 2 bras are donated; and the Gold Discount of 20% off when 3 bras are donated. This discount-for-donation is also available for web customers with the purchase of a Try-the-Fit Kit™ online.

In addition, donation of a used double electric breastpump will also qualify for the Gold Discount of 20% off any bra purchase; or a Free Bosom Buddies’ Buyers Advantage card on the purchase of a new qualifying breastpump. (Honoring the manufacturers’ and the FDA’s recommendations that breastpumps not be reused, donated pumps will be used for research.)

“For many of us, a week is hardly enough time to properly celebrate something this important, so our celebration (taking donations and offering discounts) will continue throughout the month of August,” said Sue Petracek, lactation consultant and co-owner of Bosom Buddies with partner and breastfeeding supporter Ken Petracek.

For more information on World Breastfeeding Week, visit the official website at http://www.worldbreastfeedingweek.org.

With stores in Lone Tree and Westminster and an online store at http://www.bosombuddies.com, Bosom Buddies has been serving women and supporting breastfeeding for over 14 years. The website is devoted to breastfeeding support, but Denver area stores now carry sport bras and everyday bras for non-nursing women, offering expert fitting in a wide range of sizes. Dr. Speron Agrees That Breastfeeding Does Not Create Sagging Breasts

Park Ridge, IL (PRWEB) December 8, 2007

Yes, it’s true — breastfeeding does not create sagging breasts.

While the benefits of breastfeeding are unquestionable, many new mothers choose not to for fear of getting sagging breasts at some point in the future. However, according to a study recently released, breastfeeding alone has no impact on a woman’s breast shape. Dr. Speron agrees that breastfeeding does not create sagging breasts.

“There has been an explosion of breast augmentation and breast lifting procedures in the last few years,” says Dr. Sam Speron, plastic surgery expert and consumer advocate. “Many women who come in for corrective breast surgery complaining of saggy or less full breasts believe they are like this because they breastfed their children. Although the amount of sagging in the breasts has been proven to increase with each pregnancy, this study showed that breastfeeding does not worsen sagging. Some women may have been reluctant to breastfeed because of this urban legend that doing so means the end of youthful, perky breasts! Expectant mothers can now relax knowing that the act of breastfeeding does not in and of itself change the appearance of their breasts.”

The study examined 93 women who were pregnant one or more times prior to having cosmetic breast surgery. Fifty-eight percent of patients reported breastfeeding one or more of their children. The duration of breastfeeding ranged from 2 to 25 months, with an average of nine months. Fifty-five percent of respondents reported an adverse change in the shape of their breasts following pregnancy.

As the first study to examine what impacts breast shape in connection to pregnancy, plastic surgeons found that a history of breastfeeding, the number of children breastfed, the duration of each child’s breastfeeding or the amount of weight gained during pregnancy were actually not significant predictors for losing breast shape. However, the body mass index (BMI), number of pregnancies, larger pre-pregnancy bra size, a smoking history and age were all significant risk factors for an increased degree of breast sagging.

Over 103,000 women had breast lifts in 2006, up 96 percent since 2000, according to the ASPS. In addition, more than 329,000 women had breast augmentation, easily making it the top female surgical cosmetic procedure in 2006.

Breast milk provides many health benefits to infants. Research has shown breastfed infants have improved general health, growth and development as well as a lower risk of many acute and chronic illnesses than are their bottle-fed infant counterparts.

Dr Speron has been actively sharing this exciting revelation with his patients. Dr. Speron is the founder and medical director of the Park Ridge Center for Plastic Surgery. He is board certified with the American Board of Plastic Surgery and an active member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

Simplisse™ Delivers Major Advance in Expressing Breast Milk With the Gentle, Effective Double Electric Breastfeeding Companion™

The Simplisse Double Electric Breastfeeding Companion features flexible breastcups where the inner cup simulates a baby’s suckling motion by mimicking baby’s mouth movements while the soft, pliable outer cup conforms to mom’s breast.

St. Louis, MO (PRWEB) October 7, 2010

Simplisse™, a U.S.-based manufacturer of breastfeeding products, has launched the Double Electric Breastfeeding Companion™, featuring next-generation technology that uses a gentle compression motion, unlike traditional breast pumps, which results in a comfortable milk expressing session for moms.

The Simplisse Double Electric Breastfeeding Companion’s compression technology simulates the comfort and benefits of a baby at the breast to naturally and gently elicit milk. The BabyFace™ Flexible Breastcups offer a dual-cup design where the inner cup simulates a baby’s suckling motion by mimicking baby’s mouth movements while the soft, pliable outer cup conforms to mom’s breast, much like a baby’s face. The breastcups work together to provide a gentle compression on the areola, combined with a light latch pressure – similar to that of baby – to make the expressing session feel much more like baby feeding at the breast.

“This is going to change the whole way moms look at expressing milk,” says Jennifer Meyer, a Simplisse test mom from Reno, Nevada. “It’s much more natural, much more in line with what babies actually do when they feed. At first I didn’t think it was working until I looked down at the bottle and saw milk flowing. This is a game-changer, I believe.”

Extensive testing was performed to ensure the effectiveness of the Simplisse Double Electric Breastfeeding Companion. In those tests, the average time to milk letdown and the average milk volumes were comparable to the data reported in the medical literature for other pumps.

“We are bringing a kinder, gentler approach to moms expressing their breast milk,” explains Dr. Jimi Francis, Ph.D., IBCLC and Simplisse Clinical Director. “The singular goal of developing this new technology was to make expressing milk as comfortable as possible for moms while ensuring that they are able to collect the milk they need for their baby.”

The Simplisse Double Electric Breastfeeding Companion allows expression from one breast at a time or both breasts at the same time. The Breastfeeding Companion also features speed and flow knobs, which allow mom to select the most comfortable and efficient settings for her needs.

The product also features a high-style tote bag, a request from the moms who helped design the product. The black micro-fiber shoulder bag has room for the motor unit and accessories, including a cooler pack, freezer gel packs, and wet storage bag – all in a discreet, purse-like design.

The Double Electric Breastfeeding Companion is the newest addition to the complete line of Simplisse breastfeeding products, including feeding accessories, milk storage products, skin care, breast pads and nutritional supplements for breastfeeding moms.

About Simplisse, Inc.

Simplisse, Inc. created the Simplisse Breastfeeding Companion and related breast care items to enhance the natural bond between moms and babies when breastfeeding. Simplisse was designed and engineered in the USA by a team of lactation consultants and moms.

The Simplisse line includes breast pumps, breastfeeding accessories, skincare products, and nutritional supplements. For more information, visit http://www.simplisse.com.

Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center in Daytona Beach Teaches New Moms the Art of Breastfeeding

Daytona Beach, FL (PRWEB) August 16, 2010

The BirthCare Center at Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center (http://www.floridahospitalmemorial.org) is teaching new and expectant moms the art of breastfeeding their babies.

“Breastfeeding forms a beautiful bond between mother and baby,” says Susan Bekken, lactation counselor at the BirthCare Center at Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center. “Breastfeeding also provides the baby with the essential nutrition the baby needs to grow healthy and strong.”

According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) “Breastfeeding is the healthiest way to nourish our children. Mother’s milk provides protection for babies against infection. Breast milk also lowers a child’s risk of becoming obese or developing diabetes later in life.”

NIH also states that “Breastfeeding offers many benefits to nursing moms. Breastfeeding mothers have lower rates of certain kinds of cancers. Women who breastfeed also return to their pre-pregnancy weight more easily than women who bottlefeed.”

“If you are a new or expecting mom and would like to learn how to breastfeed, please contact us,” Bekken said. “Our BirthCare Center offers comprehensive breastfeeding and lactation training.”

Please visit Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center on the web at (w http://www.floridahospitalmemorial.org) or call the BirthCare Center at (386) 231-1400 to learn more.
