Number one: Nipple stimulation. Stimulate the nipples by gently rolling or suckling on them. Doing so releases oxytocin, the natural hormone that brings about increased contractions, into the mother’s bloodstream. Remember, though, that nipples stimulation must be done for no longer than five minutes at a time and that breaks should last as long as fifteen minutes in between. Stop stimulation during a contraction. Number two: Food. Examples of foods that may induce labor include pineapple, oregano, licorice, eggplant parmesan, basil, and spicy goods.
Number three: Sex. Sex can help induce labor in two ways. First, like nipple stimulation, it releases a hormone called oxytocin, which causes the uterus to contract. Second, semen contains a substance known as prostaglandins, which will help soften the cervix. Number four: Herbs. One example of herb is black cohosh, which may regulate the contractions to make them more effective. However, black cohosh is contraindicated if you have anemia or any blood clotting disorder. Number five: Castor oil. Take castor oil alone or with orange juice. Castor oil stimulates the bowels in the same way an enema would.
Number six: Walking. If you’re having contractions, but aren’t yet in labor, you can get things going by walking. This lets your hips sway from side to side, bringing your baby into a position where he or she can be born. Walking also lets gravity bring the baby down further into the pelvis, and can help relieve early pains. Number seven: Complementary therapies. If you feel comfortable with it, you could try acupuncture, massage, teas, herbs, or other homeopathic solutions.
