Pregnancy Nutrition: Soy Is Not A Health Food!
Posted by: | CommentsI apologise if this turns into a bit of a rant – I don’t intend it come out that way, but it might because I am PASSIONATE about this subject.
For years the “health food” industry has spent millions on positioning Soy as a health food and now it is in EVERYTHING! Even baby formula. And even though the Food Standards Agency has issued warnings about the dangers of Soy in infant / children’s food it is still allowed to go on today.
One of my Facebook Friends recently posted a comment on how her 4 month old baby is always hungry at around 1030pm and how she was planning to give him “goodnight milk” to see if it helped him go through the night. I immediately posted on her update that goodnight milk is made with soy as is 99% of baby formula that you will find on the shelf in the supermarket and her comment back was, “Why is soy bad?”
It seems that although all the scientific evidence is to the contrary, the “health food” industry have done such a good job of marketing soya as a healthy alternative that the truth is drowned out in all the noise they are making.
Soya should not be part of your pregnancy diet, nor should it be eaten when breastfeeding or given to your baby in formula milk or other baby food.
Soya was traditionally used in Asia as animal feed and only in times of extreme food shortage was it used by the very poor people. Even then it was used sparingly and only after lengthy fermentation – the Asians knew the dangers that we did not.
Soya is widely used as a vegetarian alternative to meat because it is high in protein BUT what the health food industry don’t tell you is that they are also high in enzyme inhibitors and antinutrients which actually block the action of your digestive enzymes in protein digestion. So the protein becomes useless to you as you cannot absorb it!
Protein is the building block of all our cells – you need it for repair and to grow strong lean muscle tissue and your baby needs it to form cells; so if unavailable protein is a regular part of your pregnancy nutrition, both you and your baby will suffer. Now the health food industry has spent billions on investing in technology to eradicate these antinutrients from soy and have succeeded to a point, but in one success lies another problem. Western soy manufacture uses high temperature manufacturing and caustic chemicals to destroy the antinutrients (trypsin inhibitors) in soy, to make it “safe” for human consumption, but in doing this the high temperature heat processing actually denatures the proteins in soy, making them difficult to digest and toxic. In addition, the process still does not remove trypsin inhibitors.
Trypsin inhibitors are particularly dangerous for pregnancy and infants as even in small amount trypsin inhibitors has been found to depress growth and cause enlargement and pathological conditions of the pancreas, including cancer.
Soybeans are also high in phytates and phytic acid blocks the uptake of magnesium, calcium, iron and zinc in the intestinal tract. During pregnancy it is vitally important that you get enough of all these minerals in your pregnancy nutrition to protect your immune system, prevent brittle bones, help your baby form properly within your belly and prevent premature labour and miscarriage. So anything which blocks the uptake of these essential nutrients is potentially extremely harmful to both you and your baby.
In children, high phytates in the diet have caused retarded growth and in babies it is especially serious as it delays the accumulation of lipids in the myelin, jeopardising brain development and proper formation of the nervous system.
Soy formula also increases the need for Folic acid and in early pregnancy this can result in neural tube defects such as Spina Bifida. It also block the uptake of fats, which also means that you cannot absorb fat soluble vitamins like Vitamin D. But whilst all these things are harmful to your pregnancy health and the development of your baby, they pale into insignificance when compared to the effect that Soy has on your hormones and your baby’s hormonal development.
Soy contains isoflavones – a compound which mimics the effects of eostrogens. Isoflavonones are powerful endocrine disruptors and alter growth patterns and proper sexual development of your baby. Isoflavonones depress thyroid function, causing autoimmune thyroid disease and have a devastating effect on sexual development in infants.
Male infants undergo a testosterone surge in the first few months of their lives where the testosterone they are producing is equal to an adult male. Isoflavanones present in the diet at this time flood the bloodstream with female hormones.
Paediatric medicine has noticed a much greater number of boys who are showing a lack of physical development of the sexual organs and whose physical maturation is greatly delayed.
Within girls, puberty begins much earlier with 48.3% of girls showing physical signs of puberty at age 8, (such as breast development or pubic hair).
So why do the government food agencies still allow Soy to be promoted as a health food to pregnant and lactating mums and worse as the main ingredient in the majority of infant formula?
MONEY!
Soy is cheap and it allows the food industry to make huge profit margins that would be unachievable without the volumes they produce. The governments GDP depends upon the taxes to keep the economy going the way it should and until a suitably cheap alternative is found this will just keep on happening.
And it’s no wonder that the majority of the experts within the government run food agencies are also major shareholders in the manufacturing companies that benefit from the profit margins that soy manufacture gives them.
So please, check everything! Like I always tell you, if you are not cooking from scratch and fresh and organic ingredients, you need to recognise everything on the label as a wholefood and if soy is one of those things – don’t use it!

Preserving Health And Beauty In Pregnancy
Posted by: | CommentsPreserving Health And Beauty In Pregnancy
Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) July 27, 2006
Most women think that it’s okay to stop exerting effort in looking beautiful during pregnancy but it’s not. Pregnancy is a time when your hormones are in a rage. It is easy to be overwhelmed by new feelings, sensations, and changes in your body that make you feel not in control. Taking care of your pregnant self lets you be in control and preserve your health and beauty. It’s not easy to look in a mirror with disheveled hair and dry, blotchy skin. It’s also frustrating to try and fit yourself in your pre-pregnant outfits. Get rid of the idea that this is normal. What’s normal is a pregnant woman embracing and enjoying her pregnancy by taking care of her body, her health and beauty.
Studies by the MRC/US Anxiety and Stress Disorders Research Unit show that babies born of happy mothers are healthier — they are heavier, more active, and agreeable. They also absorb more nutrients from their first feedings which are essential for their nourishment. Happy mothers are also found to produce better-quality milk for their babies. Negative emotions increase the risk of developing post-pregnancy depression. This affects how a mother bonds and cares for her newborn. The best way to ward off this negativity is to preserve your health and beauty.
First, follow a healthy diet under the specifications of your doctor. Do not assume that the diet your other pregnant friend follows is right for you. Your health and beauty needs are unique. You may have deficiencies or skin care needs, which your friend’s diet cannot address. Second, take supplements and vitamins according to your doctor’s instructions. Never take drugs or any form of medicine without your doctor’s approval. It may have adverse effects on your baby. Third, exercise lightly to avoid gaining excess weight. Expectant mothers normally gain 15-20 pounds; anything higher than that can give you a difficult delivery. Fourth, get adequate sleep and rest. Nothing is more stressful than sleepless nights because of hormones and restlessness. Make up for lost sleep during the day; your body tells you when it needs some shut-eye.
Of course, a pregnant woman’s health and beauty are not limited to her physical needs. Her emotional and psychological well-being are just as important. You know that nothing boosts your confidence than being thought of and complimented as beautiful. You can easily get that goddess feeling again through modern maternity fashion. Take all those loose, tent-like dresses your mother-in-law lent you. Contemporary maternity designers are coming out with new designs that showcase your pregnant body rather than hiding it. Take advantage of your fuller cleavage and wear lower necklines. Show off your pregnant belly in stretch tops that hug your curves in solid colors. Avoid hiding in busy prints and opt for simple, understated accents and accessories. Change your hairstyle — pregnancy is a perfect excuse to try the new pixie cut. Keep your posture straight and your feet pretty in fun flats and funky mules.
Health and beauty are essentials for a pregnant woman. Take care of yours to be better-equipped in caring for your baby. Treat your pregnancy as your time to shine with natural health and beauty. Staying healthy and beautiful during pregnancy is not only easy; it is the best thing you can do for yourself and your baby.

The Path to Pregnancy: Fairhaven Health Offers New Natural Products to Help Couples Conceive
Bellingham, WA (Vocus) July 10, 2009
Fairhaven Health, a leading supplier of natural fertility, pregnancy and nursing related products, offers a compelling “first step” for couples experiencing difficulty in conceiving.
Having a baby can be a miraculous, life-changing experience. Unfortunately, for many, achieving pregnancy can be a challenging and stressful experience as well. According to the American Pregnancy Association, more than six million women in the U.S. have been diagnosed with infertility issues and these statistics are increasing every year. Roughly 1 in 6 couples will have difficulty conceiving.
Historically, couples with infertility issues have been steered toward prescription drugs and costly, invasive treatments to help them become pregnant. However, thanks to a greater availability of online research along with a wider acceptance of alternative medicine, many are now turning to natural solutions before resorting to costly medical interventions. Fairhaven Health has partnered with leading fertility expert and OB-GYN, Dr. Amos Grunebaum, to create a product line that helps couples conceive naturally. Once pregnant, Fairhaven Health offers products that provide the nutritional support women need to help ensure a healthy pregnancy and beyond.
But Fairhaven Health products are not just for couples who are having difficulty in conceiving, says Dr. Grunebaum. “Our FertilAid supplements are very popular with couples who are just beginning their conception efforts. These couples are simply looking to accelerate the time in which they are able to achieve pregnancy, and to do so in as healthy a manner as possible.”
Fairhaven Health products receive overwhelmingly positive feedback from trying-to-conceive couples. Customers write in daily to share their own positive success stories, many of which had been trying to conceive for years without success.
Factors That Contribute to Difficulty in Conceiving:
Age
As women have entered the working world in increasing numbers, the average age at which they begin trying to conceive has risen. Unfortunately, a woman’s ability to release healthy eggs for fertilization gradually declines. According to the American Fertility Association, the probability of having a baby decreases 3-5% per year after the age of 30.
Nutrition & Lifestyle
In today’s hectic world, many people simply do not properly address their nutritional needs. Additionally, excess weight leads to decreased fertility and is among the main factors in preventing pregnancy. Here, certain vitamins, nutritional supplements, and dietary changes can help to restore hormonal balance and improve a couple’s chances of having a healthy baby. In addition, drinking alcohol, caffeine intake and smoking can negatively impact conception odds.
Cycle Irregularity
As conception can only occur 4-5 days prior to and on the day of ovulation, determining this ‘fertile window’ each cycle is critically important. Often times when a woman has an irregular cycle, i.e. a cycle length of under 21 days or over 36, determining this ovulation date can prove challenging. Hormonal imbalance is an underlying factor of cycle irregularity and may cause women to not ovulate at all or to skip periods. Being overweight, excessive exercise and high stress levels can also contribute to irregular cycles.

Find More Healthy Pregnancy Press Releases
Boston, MA (PRWEB) March 8, 2006
Pathways to Wellness, a Boston-based provider of holistic health services, recently launched a new Fertility Enhancement Program that combines acupuncture and yoga and is specifically designed to help women and men overcome problems related to infertility.
According to the American Society of Reproductive Medicine, an estimated 3 million couples are unable to conceive after one year of trying.
“The inclusion of acupuncture and yoga along with biomedicine creates a comprehensive fertility treatment plan that addresses all the various and complicated issues that can be present in the patient with infertility,” says Kristen Porter, MAc, LAc, Executive Director of Pathways to Wellness and New England School of Acupuncture faculty. “Holistic care provides an adjunctive treatment that brings support and nurturance to the patient in body, mind and spirit. Addressing infertility on all of these levels cultivates a landscape within that can better create and support a healthy pregnancy.”
Recent studies led by Dr. Paul C. Magarelli, an infertility doctor at the Reproductive Medicine and Fertility Center in Colorado Springs, CO and an earlier study conducted in 2002 by researchers at the University of Ulm in Germany have shown that acupuncture can enhance the success rate of in vitro fertilization (IVF). These studies indicate that using acupuncture in conjunction with IVF therapy increases the chance that the embryo will be implanted successfully and reduces the chance of miscarriage.
A 2003 Fertility and Sterility article, co-authored by a team of researchers at New York Weill Cornell Medical Center, provided a summary of research that supports acupuncture’s potential fertility-boosting benefits including regulating reproductive hormones, increasing blood flow to the uterus, and lowering stress hormones.
For many women, adding acupuncture to their infertility treatments has helped them become pregnant. And unlike many fertility drugs, acupuncture has no harmful side effects nor do women need worry about multiple births or ectopic pregnancies, common concerns when undergoing IVF and other infertility treatments.
Men, too, who are being treated for infertility problems may benefit from acupuncture according to a new study published in the July 2005 issue of the journal, Fertility and Sterility.
Findings from that study indicate that acupuncture treatments improved the quality of sperm and increased the overall number of normal sperm in a group of men with infertility problems. The researchers who conducted the study estimate that ten percent of men are infertile, and that the male partner is a factor in up to 50 percent of infertile couples.
Acupuncture and yoga can also relieve the stress and anxiety associated with infertility problems. According to the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, women being treated for infertility face stress levels on a par with those of women coping with illnesses such as cancer and heart disease.
Pathways to Wellness Fertility Enhancement Program’s yoga classes are designed to strengthen the body while quieting the mind and provide a supportive environment for women who are trying to conceive.
“The goal of the Fertility Enhancement Program is not simply a pregnancy, but rather identifying and rebalancing the energies of the body that are not flowing smoothly,” says Porter. “When we work at this root level, the patient experiences benefits in multiple aspects of their health and well-being. Acupuncture and yoga during pregnancy can continue to provide support and balance along with drug-free treatment of symptoms that may arise during the course of pregnancy.”

Health and Fitness During Pregnancy
Posted by: | CommentsDid you know that it is possible for a woman to be pregnant and not gain excess weight? There are simple means on how to make this happen. The woman needs to basically live a more positive health and fitness fit lifestyle and complement good foods with regular exercises.
It is a dream of every woman to be a mom. However, pregnancy is a difficult stage. Usually, the period is associated to excessive weight gain. Did you know that it’s possible for a pregnancy without pounds? Some think pregnancy naturally comes with added weight. Now is the time to think otherwise.
Pregnancy has always been regarded as an excuse to indulge. Normally, women tend to overeat when they are expecting. There can be changes in appetite, but it is always the case. Women think they can still gain weight anyhow. So why not just enjoy gaining added pounds? No wonder, pregnant women are usually overweight.
Pregnancy is a long nine months. Imagine how much food a woman can indulge in. Thus, women retain much weight after child labor. The problem is that it is harder to lose weight after pregnancy. You should rather avoid getting too overweight in pregnancy. This is to avoid having regrets in the end.
The concern should not always be figure and aesthetic wise, but should be more about health and fitness overall. Moreover, pregnant women should think about health above all. When you gain much weight, you compromise your overall fitness.
How can you prevent adding pounds during pregnancy? Self-control is the best way. You can always have a say on what and how much you eat. Eat nutritious foods for you and your baby. Foods like ice cream, chips and candies contribute to much weight gain. Unfortunately, they are also not nutritious. What you eat is shared to the baby. If you prefer to consume nutritious foods, nutrients are shared with the baby. Appropriate foods are usually not fat accumulating.
To stick to your figure and health, go for the better foods. Moreover, avoid junk foods and candies or sweets. They are not healthy, but are greatly fattening. Complement good food with regular exercise. Exercise routines eliminate excess fat deposits. They also improve blood circulation. Pregnant women who exercise are healthier. They can maintain ideal weight and figure. Moreover, their pregnancy will be much easier and comfortable.
You can easily have pregnancy without having to accumulate added excessive pounds. If you consume good food and exercise, you can do so. It is not that hard as you think. Pregnant women should still carry and maintain strong will in making it happen. If they aim not to gain much weight, they certainly could do so.
Health and fitness should not be compromised during pregnancy. While it is true that there is a greater urge to eat, there should be better self control imposed. After all, overindulgence could lead to excessive weight gain, which in turn could bring about a host of many other health issues and possible fatal diseases.

Health Eating Habits and Healthy Pregnancy
Posted by: | CommentsAdopting healthy eating habits is very important during pregnancy. Most people have heard the saying, ‘you’re eating for two now,’ and it’s a good thing to remember when considering nutrition during pregnancy.
Nutritional programs are available through many fertility clinics and are designed to help women achieve a healthy pregnancy. To start, let’s go over some of the foods you should embrace during your pregnancy. Protein is important for cell growth as well as blood production. Good sources of protein include lean meat, poultry, beans, peanut butter and tofu.
Carbohydrates are also important during pregnancy for energy. Breads, cereals, rice, pasta, fruits and vegetables are common sources of carbs. Calcium is very important for muscle contraction, healthy bones and teeth, and nerve function. You can get calcium from dairy products, spinach or certain fish.
To prevent anemia, iron is important during pregnancy. Look to lean red meat and fortified whole grain breads and cereals for iron. You should also get a healthy dose of vitamins A, B6, B12, C and D during pregnancy. These can be found in various fruits, vegetables, meats and dairy products. Folic acid for enzyme functions, and blood and protein production is also important. Dark yellow fruits and vegetables, green leafy vegetables, beans, nuts and peas are good sources of folic acid.
Also be sure to consume fat during your pregnancy. Talk to your doctor to determine how much fat intake is right for you. Sources of fat are numerous, but include meats, whole-milk and other dairy products, vegetable oils, peanut butter, etc. Make sure that you limit your fat intake to less than one third of your daily calorie intake. Some women may be recommended lower or higher intakes and should always consult their doctor for the best results.
As you might expect, there are also certain foods you should avoid to ensure a healthy pregnancy. Soft cheeses such as goat, Brie, blue, feta and Camembert cheese should be avoided, as well as unpasteurized milk and juice. Avoid raw eggs and any foods that contain raw eggs. This includes desserts like mousse and tiramisu. Any processed meats like hot dogs and deli meat should be avoided.
Any raw or undercooked meat, fish or poultry should also be avoided. Any fish that contains a large amount of mercury like tilefish, swordfish, king mackerel or shark should be avoided as well.

5 Most Common Health Problems During Pregnancy And Their Solutions
Posted by: | CommentsNow you are carrying your baby. Congratulations!
There are some women who experience a number of health problems during their pregnancy. You will read them along with the solutions in three parts of articles. Enjoy the reading!
1. Morning Sickness
Morning sickness refers to nausea and vomiting of pregnancy (NVP). It occurs probably due to higher hormonal levels, higher odor sensitivity and certain physiological changes in the pregnant woman’s body
Solutions
?Eat smaller meals frequently (every 2 to 3 hours) instead of three big meals in a day.
?Avoid unpleasant or strong odors.
?Try eating bland foodstuffs such as dry toasts or saltine crackers.
?In some women, taking vitamin B6 supplements alleviates morning sickness.
?Cut down the intake of fatty food, as they take long to digest so they stay longer in stomach.
?Try taking ginger ale (ensure it has real ginger) or make your own ginger tea by grating and boiling some ginger in water.
?Some women feel a relief on morning sickness by acupressure wristbands, commonly available with drugstores.
?Avoid lying down soon after meals.
If the symptoms are too much unbearable, talk to your healthcare provider, he/she will prescribe you an effective and safe medicine to prevent nausea and vomiting.
2. Fatigue
Fatigue commonly occurs during pregnancy, especially at the early and late stages of pregnancy.
Pregnancy strains your whole body and makes you feel extremely tired. Your body undergoes various changes to sustain your pregnancy, particularly the hormonal changes, causing you to feel lethargic. Lack of adequate night sleep and exhaustion because of repeated vomiting and nausea also adds to tiredness. Furthermore, you might also be worried about pregnancy, which could be wearing.
Solutions
?Get 9-10 hours sleep everyday. In between work, taking 15-20 minutes catnaps also makes a big difference so whenever you get the opportunity, use a vacant lounge, office desk or empty conference room and get a nap.
?Take healthy, nutritious diet consisting of fruits, vegetables, lean meats, skim milk, whole grains to energize you. Drink a lot of water to keep yourself hydrated.
?Engage in moderate physical activity like walking.
?Stretch your body frequently and breathe deeply.
?If possible, try regulating your schedule. Spare some work for the weekend and arrange to work at home so that you can leave your office early.
3. Frequent urination
Frequent urges to urinate is very common during early pregnancy, with some relief in second trimester.
During pregnancy, there is a considerable increase in blood volume so a lot of extra fluid is processed through your kidneys, which is eventually sent to the bladder. The increasing size of uterus also exerts a pressure on your bladder, leading to an urge to urinate.
During second trimester, the feeling might reduce because your uterus will grow and rise higher in the abdomen. However, as you approach the delivery, the baby will drop lower into the pelvis, bringing back frequent urination urges again.
Solutions
?Avoid diuretics such as tea, coffee and alcohol (alcohol is to be avoided during pregnancy anyway).
?To avoid nighttime urination (as it may disturb your sleep), cut down the amount of fluid intake after 4 pm. However, you should compensate this by taking in plenty of fluids during daytime.
?While you urinate, lean forward so that your bladder empties completely and the next urination is delayed.
Talk to your healthcare provider if you feel pain or get a burning sensation while you pee, or if the color and odor of urine changes.
4. Constipation
The major reason for constipation during pregnancy is the hormonal changes, which slows down the digestion of food by slowing down the movement of intestines.
Progesterone, the major hormone of pregnancy, is maintained at a high level throughout the pregnancy. This hormone is a muscle relaxant. Consequently, it slows down (or relaxes) the bowel (which is actually made of muscles) movements as well so the food that you eat moves slowly and waste accumulate in your body. Increasing amount of pressure from growing uterus on rectum also causes constipation. Iron supplements too add to constipation.
Solutions
?Take a diet rich in fiber. Fiber remains undigested and absorbs water, both leading to increase in bulk of feces. Consequently, there is a push on intestines to work more. Fiber rich food include vegetables (celery, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, cucumber, cabbage, tomato, pea, turnip, carrots, radishes); fruits (like orange, apples, pears, prunes); breakfast cereals; whole wheat bread.
?Drink plenty of fluids. Fluids make feces soft, preventing constipation.
?Moderate exercises like walking and swimming also stimulates the bowel movement.
5. Heartburn
Many women get heartburn during pregnancy. Although it is harmless, it can be painful and scary. You experience a burning sensation extending from base of your breastbone towards your throat.
Heartburn occurs during pregnancy because of increased progesterone levels, which has a relaxing action on muscles. Consequently, it relaxes the valve separating stomach from esophagus (food pipe) as well so that the acids in your stomach seep backward into your esophagus. During later pregnancy, as the size of your baby increases, it occupies most of the space in abdominal cavity, pushing the stomach. This also leads to heartburns.
Solutions
?Do not take foodstuffs that cause gastric discomforts, e.g., carbonated beverages; caffeine; acidic foods (citrus fruits, vinegar and tomato); spicy and highly seasoned food; chocolate; processed meats; fried or fatty foods.
?Do not take large amounts of fluids with meals. Instead, take them in between your meals.
?Avoid taking big meals. Eat small amounts but frequently (every 2 – 3 hours). Eat slowly, chewing the food properly.
?Avoid eating anything at least 3 hours before you sleep.
?Avoid bending your waist and instead bend your knees.
?Try sleeping in propped up position, resting on several pillows so that your head is elevated.
?Get yourself an anta acid, after consultation to your doctor.
