Mommy Makeover Safety Confirmed by Plastic Surgeons

Marina Del Rey, CA (PRWEB) August 12, 2006

A new medical research study published this month demonstrated the safety of multiple cosmetic procedures when performed in a single operation. This important information, published in the prestigious medical journal Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, comes at a time when “mommy makeover” surgery is gaining more public attention.

The study examined a consecutive series of 415 tummy tuck operations that were performed at Marina Plastic Surgery Associates in Marina del Rey, California. One hundred fifty-one of those patients underwent simultaneous breast surgery, and there was no increase in complication rates in that group.

Plastic surgeon Dr. W. Grant Stevens, the lead author on the research, said “this landmark study supporting the safety of combined plastic surgery operations should come as reassuring news for patients who desire more than one procedure and a single recovery period.” According to statistics from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, over 600,000 cosmetic operations were performed on the breast in 2005. The three most common types of cosmetic breast surgery were augmentation, reductions and lifts. Almost 170,000 tummy tuck procedures were performed in the same period. The combination of breast surgery and tummy tucks is especially prevalent among mothers, whose bodies frequently go through dramatic changes following pregnancy and breast-feeding. “Mommy makeover” has become a popular term for mothers who want to restore their figures through several plastic surgery procedures.

Dr. David A. Stoker, a plastic surgeon and co-author on the study said, “After doing hundreds of these cases, we were extremely pleased with our safety record. Most of our patients preferred to do multiple procedures during one operation rather than separately.” Dr. Stoker also cautions patients to do their homework before choosing a surgeon. All plastic surgical procedures have risks and possible complications. Patients are more likely to have favorable outcomes when they choose board certified plastic surgeons with expertise in their procedures of interest.

Drs. Stoker and Stevens, board certified plastic surgeons and partners in a busy practice in Marina del Rey, have seen a dramatic increase in the number of patients requesting combined cosmetic procedures. In addition to their research, the surgeons have responded to the public interest by creating a website, http://www.amommymakeover.com, dedicated to answering questions mothers frequently ask. Dr. Stoker adds, “Many mothers find it comforting to know that they have more options than ever for restoring their youthful appearance.”

More Mothers Turning to Plastic Surgery for a “Mommy Makeover”

Oklahoma City, OK (PRWEB) August 28, 2009

A new trend in plastic surgery is offering mothers a chance to regain their pre-baby bodies. The “mommy makeover,” a trifecta of surgeries, is gaining popularity across the nation and here in Oklahoma.

A mommy makeover often consists of a breast augmentation or a breast lift, a tummy tuck and liposuction. Last year, doctors nationwide performed more than 325,000 mommy makeover procedures on women ages 20 to 39, up 11 percent from 2005, according to information from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

Plastic surgeon Dr. Juan Brou, whose practice is based in Oklahoma City, said he has also seen a rise in mothers seeking these types of procedures.

“Weight gain with pregnancy will often put fat deposits in the wrong areas,” Brou said. “Someone can work and exercise very hard and these deposits still don’t go away. Some people just can’t shake it off.”

Many moms turn to liposuction to remove these fatty areas. Breast augmentation and breast lifts are also popular post-baby procedures, Brou said.

“Even if women don’t breast feed, the breasts can still loose substance and volume,” Brou said. “Many women want their breast restored to their original volume and look.”

Tummy tucks are another common procedure that can eliminate both stretch marks and a condition known as diastasis. Diastasis occurs when a woman’s abdominal muscles become separated, which sometimes happens in women who are carrying large babies. This condition leaves a woman with a lower tummy that cannot be exercised away.

Brou pointed out that it is important for women considering having their own mommy makeover to be sure they don’t intend to get pregnant again.

“I always tell the patient that if you want to have more kids to do that before the surgery,” Brou said. “Most commonly, patients came to see me after they’ve had about three children and are happy with the size of their family.”

A Growing Number of Women are Undergoing Mommy Makeovers at The Swan Center for Plastic Surgery

Plastic Surgeon Atlanta

Atlanta, GA (Vocus) May 5, 2010

In increasing numbers, women are looking to have cosmetic surgery for a mommy makeover. Atlanta women are no longer accepting the flabby, sagging skin, deflated breasts and pockets of fat left behind after pregnancy.

“One reason these series of procedures has taken off is the advancements in techniques and safety, which is important for surgeries that take several hours,” says Dr. Joseph G. Bauer of The Swan Center. “Another reason is simply that the stigma of vanity has faded when it comes to cosmetic surgery. It is accepted in the cities and the suburbs, not just Hollywood.”

With Dr. Bauer’s expert eye, each mommy makeover is tailored to each patient. During the consultation, he listens, evaluates and recommends the series of procedures that would best achieve the desired results.

The term ‘mommy makeover’ is an umbrella word for a series of procedures. Moms can choose one or all of the procedures, which are typically done at the same time. Breast augmentation, body lifts, liposuction, tummy tuck and breast lift are all considered part of the ‘mommy makeover’ when they are used to reverse the effects of childbirth and restore and enhance the body. When looking for a plastic surgeon, Atlanta moms have the experience and expertise of Dr. Bauer and the rest of the staff at The Swan Center.

A mommy makeover Atlanta can include one or all of these body contouring procedures to achieve your wishes and needs:

> Breast augmentation- This is probably the most common procedure performed. Pregnancy is hard on the breasts. As they lose tissue, they begin to look like deflated “pancake” breasts. Implants fill them out. A lift may be necessary to complete the look.

> Breast lift (Mastopexy)- When there is too much sagging or droopiness, a lift is the only way to restore the breasts to a perkier position. The breasts gain volume during pregnancy and breast-feeding, but when it is over, they lose this volume and sagging occurs. The lift removes excess skin and lifts the breast to a natural position. Implants are often used in addition to the lift to make up for the lost volume.

> Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)- Another common mommy makeover procedure. Babies stretch out the stomach and abdominal muscles to the point they may not bounce back. Mom may look like she is still pregnant because of the resulting bulge. A tummy tuck tightens abdominal muscles and gets rid of excess skin and fat.

> Liposuction/Fat grafting- Exercise and diet after baby doesn’t always get rid of the pregnancy weight. Dr. Bauer can contour the results of the mommy makeover by removing pockets of fat using a cannula, which vacuums the fat from under the skin. He can also use this fat to add volume to other areas of the body if desired.

> Thigh lift- Like the rest of the body, pregnancy is stressful on the thighs. Removing the excess skin of the outer and inner thighs helps slim the lines of the body.

“Because of advances in anesthesia, we can perform one or all of these procedures in the same session,” says Dr. Bauer. “And, after the healing is done, moms have a new body that they can be proud of. Just because you’re a mom doesn’t mean you can’t be sexy and youthful.”

Before committing to a mommy makeover, it is important to be at a stable weight, finished having children and finished breast-feeding. This is to make sure the final results are the best they can be. Future pregnancies and weight gain can reverse some of the mommy makeover cosmetic procedures performed.

As a world-renowned plastic surgeon and founder of The Swan Center, Dr. Bauer along with his colleagues are dedicated to offering personalized care to all of their patients. Dr. Bauer has an eye for seeing the uniqueness of each mom and he uses the mommy makeover to bring out the very best of her qualities.

The surgeons and staff at The Swan Center for Plastic Surgery are humbled by the many expressions of gratitude and appreciation from their patients both far and wide.

Parker Center Introduces The Many Forms of the Mommy Makeover

Dr. Paul M. Parker

Paramus, NJ (Vocus) April 8, 2010

The term Mommy Makeover has really taken off in the cosmetic surgery field. It is an umbrella term for a series of procedures to correct problems caused by pregnancy. “The ravages of pregnancy can take on a variety of forms,” says New Jersey plastic surgeon, Dr. Paul M. Parker of the Parker Center in Paramus, NJ.

This is why the consultation is so important in determining what is bothering each mom and addressing those concerns with the right procedures. The three most common surgeries are breast surgery, tummy tuck and liposuction.

The various forms breast surgery can take in a mommy makeover:

Breast augmentation–after pregnancy and breast feeding have engorged and stretched the breasts, many women will lose volume in their breasts, particularly the upper portion of the breasts. A New Jersey breast augmentation can restore this lost volume and provide some lift to the breast.

Breast augmentation and lift – after pregnancy and breast feeding have engorged and stretched the breasts, some women will lose volume in their breasts and the breasts will sag significantly. Breast augmentation can restore this lost volume. In addition to this, the loose, sagging skin can be tightened with a breast lift procedure (also known as augmentation mastopexy) returning the breasts to a perkier, more youthful position on the chest.

Breast lift alone-after pregnancy and breast feeding have engorged and stretched the breasts, some women will retain volume in their breasts but the breasts will sag significantly. A New Jersey breast lift alone (also known as mastopexy) will tighten the loose, sagging skin and return the breasts to a perkier, more youthful position on the chest.

Breast Reduction with lift- after pregnancy and breast feeding have engorged and stretched the breasts, some women will gain volume instead of losing it. This can cause back pain, neck pain and leave them uncomfortable. Breast reduction reduces the volume of the breast by removing the excess tissue and skin. In performing a breast reduction, the breast is also lifted to a perkier, more youthful position on the chest.
The various forms a tummy tuck can take in a mommy makeover:

Liposuction- Some moms retain a lot of excess fatty pockets around the mid-section after the weight gain of pregnancy, but retain good skin and muscle tone. In these patients, liposuction alone will allow Dr. Parker to contour the abdomen.

Mini tuck- This is for the mom who develops some loose skin and loose muscles in the lower part of the abdomen. A mini tuck allows Dr. Parker to remove the excess skin and tighten these lower abdominal muscles; if there are excess fatty pockets, these can be treated with liposuction at the same time (mini lipo abdominoplasty).

Lipo abdominoplasty or tummy tuck- This is for the mom who has developed significant excess skin, fatty pockets and loose abdominal muscles. Dr. Parker uses VASER liposuction in conjunction with a tummy tuck procedure to remove unwanted fat, tighten loose muscle and remove loose skin.

Liposuction may be needed in different areas of the body for women who retain excess fat following pregnancy. Dr. Parker will commonly re shape the hips, thighs, buttocks, arms, back and/ or neck. Patients vary in terms of who will retain fat in these different areas.

“The combination of procedures that each mom needs depends on their age, genetics and how parts of their body have aged due to pregnancy,” says Dr. Parker. “One mom may need a breast augmentation and a mini-tuck while another mom may need a breast lift with implants, lipo abdominoplasty and liposuction of her hips and thighs. There are quite a number of possible combinations.”

In recent years, facial procedures have become more popular with moms. Over time, the effects of weight gain and loss after pregnancy can accelerate facial aging prompting these patients to seek face and neck lifts. Of course, some moms requesting these procedures are in their 50s and 60s and they want their face to match their younger-looking body.

New Jersey plastic surgeon, Dr. Parker, performs all of his mommy makeovers in his state-of-the-art on site, fully certified ambulatory surgical facility. Here, his experienced team of board certified anesthesiologists and registered nurses have worked tirelessly with him to ensure a safe and comfortable environment.

Many moms voice concerns about taking time away from their families to undergo and recover from these mommy makeover surgical procedures. The Parker Center’s Rapid Recovery program allows these patients to recover quickly, minimizing the pain associated with these surgeries.

As patients recover from mommy makeover surgeries, not only do they look great but emotionally, they feel younger with more energy, sexy and more self confident. Those who have put these procedures off for years will often say “If I had known I would look and feel this good, I would have done this sooner”.
