Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center in Daytona Beach Teaches New Moms the Art of Breastfeeding

Daytona Beach, FL (PRWEB) August 16, 2010

The BirthCare Center at Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center (http://www.floridahospitalmemorial.org) is teaching new and expectant moms the art of breastfeeding their babies.

“Breastfeeding forms a beautiful bond between mother and baby,” says Susan Bekken, lactation counselor at the BirthCare Center at Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center. “Breastfeeding also provides the baby with the essential nutrition the baby needs to grow healthy and strong.”

According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) “Breastfeeding is the healthiest way to nourish our children. Mother’s milk provides protection for babies against infection. Breast milk also lowers a child’s risk of becoming obese or developing diabetes later in life.”

NIH also states that “Breastfeeding offers many benefits to nursing moms. Breastfeeding mothers have lower rates of certain kinds of cancers. Women who breastfeed also return to their pre-pregnancy weight more easily than women who bottlefeed.”

“If you are a new or expecting mom and would like to learn how to breastfeed, please contact us,” Bekken said. “Our BirthCare Center offers comprehensive breastfeeding and lactation training.”

Please visit Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center on the web at (w http://www.floridahospitalmemorial.org) or call the BirthCare Center at (386) 231-1400 to learn more.

International Board Certified Lactation Consultant Urges New Moms Not To Get Discouraged In Early Days Of Breastfeeding

LatchAssist

Alexandria, VA (PRWEB) September 5, 2008

Recently released government studies show that more than 75 percent of mothers initiate breastfeeding in the early weeks after birth. However, in the early days, moms may experience engorgement or swollen breasts, a temporary condition that can make breastfeeding difficult or uncomfortable.

Breastfeeding: Overcoming Initial Challenges

“Breastfeeding while engorged can be difficult since the baby can have a hard time properly latching on due to flattened nipples, but don’t let this discourage you,” says Rubina Mason, international board-certified lactation consultant and member of the Lansinoh Laboratories breastfeeding advisory board. If your breasts do become engorged, nursing frequently is a great way to alleviate this condition. If you find that your baby cannot latch on because of your swollen breasts, taking warm to hot showers can also help soften your breasts, allowing you to breastfeed more comfortably.

“You can also use the new Lansinoh LatchAssist,” advises Mason. “The LatchAssist gently draws temporarily flattened nipples out so baby can more easily latch on during the early days of breastfeeding.” After nursing, use an ice pack to help keep the swelling down and relieve the pain.

It’s also important to know that in the early weeks of breastfeeding, along with swelling and engorgement, your nipples can also be tender and sore. However, Mason adds, “Sore nipples are not inevitable during the early days of breastfeeding. Painful feedings are a signal that something is not right and you may need to make a change in your positioning or your baby’s latch-on technique.” In the meantime, if your nipples do become sore or cracked, Lansinoh® HPA® Lanolin can be applied to soothe, heal and protect the nipple skin. Lansinoh HPA Lanolin, the world’s purest and safest lanolin, is virtually odorless and contains no preservatives, no additives, no water, no chemicals, and no perfume, and most importantly, it is safe for the baby and therefore does not need to be removed before breastfeeding.

“In the early days of breastfeeding, you’ll have to keep working at getting your baby latched-on properly, even if it means gently taking the baby off the breast and starting over several times at the beginning of feedings,” explains Mason. Breastfeeding is natural but it does not always come naturally. By trying to get the baby’s latch perfected in the beginning of the process, mom can hopefully lessen any discomfort she may experience and have a rewarding and satisfying breastfeeding relationship with her baby.

Best for Babes Reveals New Ad for World Breastfeeding Week, Urges More Help for Moms

Best for Babes Breastfeeding Ad

Little Silver, NJ (PRWEB) August 6, 2009

The Best for Babes Foundation is releasing a provocative new ad to coincide with World Breastfeeding Week, which takes place from August 1-7 in 150 countries.

The eye-catching ad is a visual pun with a serious message: Not only does breastfeeding save lives every day and in emergencies, but expecting moms need more help and to be better prepared to overcome insidious and systemic barriers to breastfeeding. The ad urges expecting mothers to find a support group, get expert lactation help, and choose hospitals and physicians that are truly breastfeeding friendly.

Best for Babes Co-Founders Bettina Forbes and Danielle Rigg contend that women are being pressured to breastfeed, but prevented from succeeding. “Moms don’t need more pressure, judgment or guilt,” says Forbes, who initially did not want to breastfeed. “It’s the cultural and institutional barriers–or ‘booby traps’–that are keeping moms from making informed decisions, and keeping those moms who want to breastfeed from achieving their personal breastfeeding goals,” says Rigg, who ran a successful lactation counseling practice.

What are the barriers? “Last year, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reported that most U.S. hospitals actually thwart breastfeeding. Add social disapproval, fear of nursing in public, insufficient insurance coverage for lactation counseling or supplies, and the beguiling and shameless promotion of infant formula, and you begin to get the full picture of how moms and babies are being thrown overboard,” asserts Forbes. “The U.S. has inadequate maternity leave policies. While many employers offer smoking breaks, too few offer pumping breaks or lactation rooms, and breastfeeding women are not protected from being discriminated against or fired,” explains Rigg.

The new ad will run in the Fall/Winter issue of Mom & Baby magazine and online through TheFamilyGroove.com and various blogs. Frank About Women, the nation’s leading marketing-to-women communications firm, donated the six-figure ad campaign entirely pro-bono. Leading breastfeeding experts and celebrities endorse the campaign, including Ruth Lawrence, M.D., Founder of the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine and Chair of the Breastfeeding Section of the American Academy of Pediatrics; Joan Meek, M.D. Chair of the United States Breastfeeding Committee; actress and best-selling author Marilu Henner, and athelete and author Gabrielle Reece. The campaign is being backed by a growing corporate alliance of International Code Compliant companies, including Earth Mama Angel Baby, My Brest Friend, Hotslings, Pumpease, and My Baby Experts.

Formula Ban at Hospitals to New Moms a Necessary Plan?

New York, NY (PRWEB) August 10, 2007

The New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation (HHC) recently announced that it will exclude free baby formula samples from gift bags to new mothers, believing that the health benefits of nursing newborns are tremendous and that it has a responsibility to discourage the use of formula. A new national poll conducted for iVillage by GfK Roper Public Affairs and Media has found that 54 percent of Americans disagree with the recent decisions to ban baby formula in the gift bags given to new moms in public hospitals.

“The findings from our poll highlight one of the bigger controversies surrounding new moms today,” said Jennie Baird, Senior Vice President & Editor-in-Chief for iVillage Lifestyles. “It is clear from our results that Americans are concerned with actions taken by hospitals and feel more comfortable making the decisions in their own newborn’s health.”

Women are particularly against this idea, with six in ten saying they disagree with the ban on baby formula provided in gift bags for new mothers.

The results also revealed a larger than expected percentage of those that agreed with the ban. 38 percent of Americans polled think it is a necessary step to promote the practice of breast feeding. Four in ten Americans agree, particularly men who are significantly more likely than women to agree with the action.

With so many expenses that you have to worry about, you could use a little help. Busy moms and moms who have to work within budgets know just how much something free helps. It is not just the money issue either; everyone loves to get free stuff. Even people worth billions of dollars love getting their free goodie bags at their big fancy parties. Getting free stuff through the mail for your baby is like Christmas.

So what can of free stuff can a mother get? Well, for starters, how about some free formula? Yes, I said free formula. There are many formula companies that would love for you to become their newest customer. So to win you over, they will send you a few free cans of formula or some coupons for the formula at the grocery store. Since the average can of formula is around ten to fifteen dollars, this is one nice free gift.

Mothers can also receive free diaper samples. You might only get one or two diapers per brand but it all adds up. Plus those extra diapers work great for backup diapers in the car, at grandma’s, or simply for when you run out and cannot make it to the store. Those free diaper samples work much better than a washcloth and duck tape.

There are many more items that you can get for free. All you have to do is look in the right places and send them your information. Remember, you cannot get all of that wonderful totally free baby stuff unless they know where to send it to.

So where do you go? Where do you look? And who do you have to kiss-up to in order to snag some of this great free stuff? Well, you go online. You look on websites and you do not have to kiss-up to anyone.

Start by typing “free baby stuff” into a major search engine and start reading through the sites that come up. There are many sites out there that are dedicated to listing all of the totally free baby stuff that they can find, so that you and other mother’s do not have to spend hours upon hours looking for some coupons.

And do not be alarmed if these companies want to know your name and address. Remember, they have to ship your free stuff to you. Also, they may ask for the age of your baby, the age of any other children you have in the home and maybe even if you would be interested in receiving updates and newsletters from them.

Get started filling it all out as most samples will take anywhere from ten days to six weeks to receive. Even if you have not yet delivered your baby, as long as you have a due date you can begin to request the free baby stuff.

Chona Mcnally is a mom who enjoys finding totally free baby stuff. Finding free stuff surely does make economic sense, especially for moms with really tight budget. Find baby freebies and more offers at http://www.mombabyideas.com

Multitask person and alone
You find yourself blessed with healthy pregnancy, or on the way to. Congratulation! However, if as a mother you are single it could be very challenging for you to survive and nurture a child in the proper way. Without a male earning member in the family it might be very hard for you to look after every aspect of the house. You are supposed to take care of both the outdoor tasks (as earning),as well as indoor tasks like taking care of all household things and nurturing a child as well. Sounds challenging? Yes, it might, but at list the government has legislated some rules and grants that would help you.
How can I make it?
In order to help these mothers who are single, because of any reason, the government has the procedure of granting financial aid to the mothers who have liabilities on them. These liabilities include home rent, daily expenditures, medical costs, etc. these grants are only accepted by the mother who are qualified for the same. Main idea of the government behind processing these grants is to reduce the burden of daily activities and to help the mothers get healthy pregnancy and nurture their little ones after delivery in appropriate way. The types of grants that are given by the government to single mothers are:
Grants that are given to single mothers:
? Government Grants for House Rent: this is the grant that is given in case the mother is living in a rented house. If the mother is not capable of paying the rent to the landlord, the government helps the mother by providing financial aid. This aid is specifically called Government Grant for House Rent so that it can be categorized and documented according to the purpose for which it has been provided.
? Government Grants for Day Care: if a mother who is single falls under a specific category she is provided with the Grants for Day Care. This aid is provided to the mother to help her out with daily expenses which are necessary to run the house.
? Government Grants for Single Moms’ Higher Education: this grant is the most important grants and is widely used and availed by most of the single moms around the globe. Under this grant moms are given financial aid so that they can go to the college’s to gain higher education and make their career bright by earning handsome amount for her living.
? Government Grants for Housing: this is the grant which is provided to would be mother who single if she wants to buy her own house to in order to have healthy pregnancy intact. As a single mother with a small child it could be very hard for her to live in a rented house. To avoid such kind of situation the government provides financial aid in the name of Grants for Housing to help these mothers.

Do they give me a loan or a grant?
Above are the grants provided by the government to help the lady who has signs of pregnancy and is about to be a single mother in the society. These grants are not considered as the loans by the government because they’re not supposed to be paid back to the government, not at least within a specific time limit.
So, where should I start to get these grants?
There are many sites available on the Internet through which single mothers can download the application form and then they need to wait for the acceptance of the form. Once the form is accepted by the government, the mother will get the financial aid from the government. The process from the government side, however, takes some time because the applicant is scanned thoroughly by the department.

When one is learning about life cycles in science classes at school, one may feel that it is only insects that grow in stages. But experience brings wisdom as one grows up. The human baby also passes through various stages in the mother’s womb before emerging into the real world. Carrying a growing fetus within her body and giving birth to a full-grown newborn after several months is an extremely significant biological event in a woman’s life, considering that she has to undergo a lot of stress and upheavals during the entire stages of pregnancy.

No one can argue that every pregnant woman needs a lot of fortitude to undertake this difficult journey in life. At the same time, whether it is a first-time pregnancy or a second or a third one, each experience is unique by itself.

The stages of pregnancy can be split into three quarters, each quarter representing a period of three months known as a trimester—

During the first trimester, the mother-to-be does not exhibit visible signs of pregnancy, though there are great changes taking place inside the womb, or rather uterus. As a matter of fact, a lot of things begin to happen as soon as conception has taken place, maybe even before the pregnant woman is actually aware that she has conceived! The embryo starts dividing very rapidly at this time and there are constant hormonal changes within the woman’s body. As a result, morning sickness is experienced and so also tenderness of the breasts. A few lucky women do not experience these symptoms, but generally most pregnant women find this to be a common event.

The first trimester can be classified as one of the truly exciting stages of pregnancy, because this is when the heartbeat of the growing fetus can be felt! Also, the baby is able to move its tiny legs and arms.

Now follows the second trimester. Among the various stages of pregnancy, many women find this time to be very comfortable. All the discomforts experienced during the first three months disappear. Additionally, activities do not cause any difficulty, considering that the uterus has still not developed to its full size. But other changes do take place. It is possible that Braxton Hicks contractions begin during this time. These are like practice contractions and cause discomfort while sleeping. In fact, the soon-to-be mother may be hard put to find a comfortable position to sleep in! At the same time, the new mother is rewarded as she can now sense the movements of the growing baby. Some women are even able to see the movements!

The last trimester or the final stages of pregnancy brings about a number of changes. Growth of the baby is as fast as it was during the first trimester. As the baby grows in size, so does the pregnant woman’s abdomen! The movements of the baby may not be felt as regularly as they were during the second trimester, but there is really no need to get alarmed about it. It is just that the baby has taken up so much space that internal movements are not visible outside!

It is important that the new mother uses this time during the last stages of pregnancy to fortify her health by taking nutritious meals and relaxing a lot. She should try and remain serene at all times. Additionally, she can attend classes on childbirth and breastfeeding to be prepared for both when the time arrives.
