Columbus, Ohio Mother Launches Breastfeeding Advocacy Product Line
Posted by: | CommentsColumbus, Ohio Mother Launches Breastfeeding Advocacy Product Line
Columbus, OH (PRWEB) December 30, 2004
A Columbus, Ohio mother of two has created a new product line enabling moms, dads, babies, and kids Â? and anyone else who is passionate about breastfeeding Â? to promote and support this important healthy start to a babyÂ?s life. MamaÂ?s Milk Tees, found at http://www.mamasmilktees.com on the World Wide Web, provides a wide range of designs on everything from t-shirts, sweatshirts, and baby bibs to mugs, prints, and calendars.
The designs by store owner Anna Swank range from somewhat subtle to in-your-face. Says Swank, Â?I realize that not everyone is as brazen about breastfeeding as I am, but there are also those who are even more outspoken than I am. My line includes products that cater to both ends of the spectrum.Â? Swank goes on to say she created the line primarily out of frustration. Â?After my son was born, I scoured the internet and retail stores for fun shirts that promoted breastfeeding. By the time I had my daughter, I realized that if I wanted to wear such items, I was going to have to create them myself.Â?
Although the initial designs were primarily text and cartoon images, new designs display images of real babies breastfeeding. Many of the photographs used were contributed by women around the world who share SwankÂ?s passion for breastfeeding, and believe that breastmilk is the healthiest food a mother can give her baby.
The US Department of Health and Human Services Office on WomenÂ?s Health recently launched a National Breastfeeding Awareness Campaign to promote breastfeeding. The overall goal of the campaign is to increase the proportion of breastfed newborn babies to 75%, and the proportion of six month old babies to 50% by the year 2010. Swank believes that raising awareness about breastfeeding among the general public is an important step in reaching these goals. Â?For years, bottle-feeding has been the perceived norm among the general population,Â? says Swank. Â?Sadly, many breastfeeding mothers have been relegated to backrooms and dirty bathrooms to feed their babies. I hope that the fun and encouraging messages of my designs will help these mothers feel comfortable feeding their babies wherever they happen to be. After all, itÂ?s not really about a motherÂ?s right to breastfeed. ItÂ?s about a babyÂ?s right to eat.Â?

La Leche League GB introduces 3 new publications Caesarean Birth and Breastfeeding, Supporting a Breastfeeding Mother and My Baby Needs More Milk
Nottingham, UK (PRWeb UK) April 2, 2009
La Leche League GB is pleased to announce the publication of the new information sheets:
Caesarean Birth and Breastfeeding
Breastfeeding completes the normal, natural cycle of pregnancy, labour and birth. During pregnancy a mother’s body is preparing to give birth and her breasts are getting ready to feed her baby. A caesarean birth interferes with these natural processes and may make establishing breastfeeding more of a challenge. However, many mums do successfully breastfeed after a caesarean birth.
Not only is breastfeeding the normal, natural and healthy way to feed a baby–it can give a mum who has experienced a caesarean birth renewed confidence in her body’s abilities. The close physical contact can also help her feel better emotionally. Breastfeeding helps the womb to contract, resulting in quicker healing. And it’s nature’s way of ensuring a mum spends time sitting or lying down, resting and recovering.
This information sheet provides detailed information a mum needs to help get breastfeeding off to a good start, with suggestions for before, during and after a caesarean birth.
Supporting a Breastfeeding Mother
Families need time to adjust after the arrival of a baby. Even experienced mothers can have difficulties juggling the needs of the new baby with those of older children. At this time a pair of practical helping hands can make a significant difference by allowing a mother time to recover from the birth and establish breastfeeding.
This information sheet offers practical tips for anyone supporting a breastfeeding mum and provides answers to questions supporters frequently ask.
My Baby Needs More Milk
Although most mothers are able to produce enough milk for their babies’ needs, a mother may have concerns about her own supply. Perhaps she and her baby had a difficult start or were not given the support they needed to establish breastfeeding. Or all may have seemed to be going well until the baby’s weight gain pattern faltered. Sometimes well-meaning people sow the seeds of doubt in a mother’s mind. And if a baby is fussy, wants to feed much of the time, seems small, or gains weight slowly, it can be easy for a mother to believe she doesn’t have enough milk.
This comprehensive A3 Information Sheet from LLLGB is an invaluable tool for helping a mother assess if her baby is getting enough milk and describes in detail the steps she can take should she need to increase her milk production. Where supplements are needed while a mother works to improve her milk supply, My Baby Needs More Milk provides essential information on how they may be given alongside breastfeeding and how to return to full breastfeeding once supplements are no longer necessary.

Breastfeeding for health
Recent research has increased the knowledge of the health risks to both mother and child from not breastfeeding. Babies who are not exclusively breastfed for the first six months have an increased risk of:
Gastrointestinal conditions
Chest infections
Ear infections
Obesity
Developing diabetes
Having a heart attack in later life.
Breastfeeding protects against infection and allergies. Women who breastfeed have a reduced risk of osteoporosis, breast and ovarian cancer and find it easier to return to their normal weight after the birth.
Breastfeeding for well-being
La Leche League believes that breastfeeding, with its many important physical and psychological advantages, is best for both a mother and her baby, and is the ideal way to initiate good parent-child relationships. The loving help and support of the baby’s father enables the mother to focus on mothering so that together parents can develop close relationships that strengthen the family and thus the whole fabric of society.
La Leche League has been offering breastfeeding help, support and encouragement to women for over 50 years. We provide monthly support meetings, telephone counselling, leaflets and up-to-date information. For details of local groups visit our website http://www.laleche.org.uk or phone our national helpline 0845 120 2918. LLL’s trained counsellors (Leaders) are volunteers working from home while caring for their own families.
Editor’s notes:
La Leche League (LLL) was founded in 1956 by seven mothers who wanted to make breastfeeding easier and more rewarding for both mother and child. The organisation continues to provide information and encouragement–primarily through personal help–to women who want to breastfeed their babies.
LLLGB, a Registered UK Charity (Number 283771) is part of La Leche League International which is active in 65 countries and territories reaching more than 200,000 mothers monthly through a network of over 6,700 accredited, volunteer counsellors (known as Leaders).
LLL International is a major publisher of breastfeeding and parenting books. LLLGB sells these and other books through its trading subsidiary, LLLGB Books (http://www.lllgbbooks.co.uk)

Pregnancy Guide 101 – A Synopsis For The Expectant Mother, All You Need To Know
Posted by: | CommentsAmazingly, just like no two people have the exact same thumbprints, no two women the world over experience the exact same sets of symptoms. This phenomenon makes pregnancy a very special thing indeed. Nevertheless, there are certain highlights that are generally present where pregnancy is concerned. For example; certain times of fatigue and growth are commonly expected to occur in most pregnancies. Also, women who are pregnant are expected to go for regular checkups to determine if there are any complications or if the baby and mom are in good health. This article is a pregnancy guide that will look at the most commonly shared conditions and happenings of a typical pregnancy…
1. Time Frame – As a general rule, a pregnancy term, which spans over a nine-month period is divided into three trimesters. The first trimester is a period characterized by rapid surges in hormonal levels causing significant changes in your body in anticipation of the new life you would soon be carrying. The Second trimester is when the growth of your abdomen really begins to be noticeable amongst other physical changes. The third trimester is when you baby begins to rapidly develop and prepares to be born.
2. Features – The pregnancy term consists of about nine months of growth although your baby will grow at differing rates during these periods. Compared to the rate of growth in the later stages of pregnancy, the initial growth rate of the embryo is extremely rapid. The reason behind the so-called “morning sickness” which is actually characterized by nausea and vomiting is the need for pregnancy hormones that occur during the first trimester. Up to 80% of pregnant women experience this morning sickness early in their pregnancies.
3. Significance – One of the major characteristics of the second trimester is that the pregnant woman’s energy increases. Appetites return for most women and the morning sickness fades away. Also, around this time, the abdomen begins to expand and food cravings also begin. This is also when the mother begins to feel the baby moving for the first time. Babies have the most space to move during this period and can really be very active.
4. Function – The baby begins to put on weight during the third trimester in preparation for the birth process. S/He would typically gain about an ounce of fat daily by the end of a typical 40-week pregnancy. After birth, as your baby begins to adjust to drinking milk and bowel movements, s/he will often lose weight. Due to its large size, the baby will move less during the third trimester and should move into a position with its head pointing downwards in preparation for birth.
5. Considerations – Undergoing a full physical exam is a requirement during your first trimester. This exam will also assess the heartbeat of the fetus. To ensure that the fetus is in the proper position, some doctors will order that an ultrasound be taken in the ninth or tenth week. Several blood tests are done during the second trimester to check for possible birth defects as well as high blood pressure, gestational diabetes and anemia. It may also be necessary to do a second ultrasound during this period to access the baby’s rate of growth and organs. Weekly appointments to get your blood pressure checked and your baby’s heart rate monitored for abnormalities is often necessary during the third trimester.

How a Healthy Pregnancy Diet and Healthy Mother Go Hand in Hand
Posted by: | CommentsA healthy pregnancy diet and a healthy mother go hand in hand. Eating well is always important whether you are expecting or not. During pregnancy, however, proper nutrition is especially important for expectant mothers because pregnancy is such a delicate time. What is put into the body has profoundly greater impact since it affects two lives.
Yet eating during pregnancy can be a controversial topic. Experts differ on what should be eaten, in what amounts and how often throughout the day and night. The bottom line is a poor diet during pregnancy can lead to unwanted consequences for both mother and child.
It is therefore vitally important that the mother sifts through all the shifting views and opinions to find out what is really right for her.
Controversial Diet #1
Some experts claim veganism, or at least vegetarianism is the very best way to fuel the human body. Does a vegetarian diet and pregnancy really mix? The answer is yes, with a few provisions.
Proteins are critical to sustain health at any time, but as part of a healthy pregnancy diet, proteins bear an even greater role. Experts recommend anywhere from 50 to 60 grams of protein consumption per day to maintain healthy pregnancy, some experts claim even more is needed. Vegetarian diets and pregnancy may have difficulty hitting this high number if special care is not taken to add appropriate protein sources.
Controversial Diet #2
It may sound funny but a high protein diet during pregnancy is just as controversial as a vegetarian diet during pregnancy, but for the opposite reason. A poor diet during pregnancy is any diet that does not adequately fulfill the nutritious needs of mother and baby.
Vegetarians tend to excel at vitamin and mineral consumption, but may lack important nutrients from amino acids. On the other hand, a high protein diet pregnancy may hit surplus numbers for amino acids and other nutrients found in protein but be woefully lacking in other essential nutrients.
In the end, what is needed is a meeting in the middle. The body communicates its needs. During pregnancy, a lack of certain nutrients will manifest in cravings, fatigue, moodiness and a general lack of energy. Selecting foods from all the food groups will eliminate these symptoms.
Isabel De Los Rios, nutritionist, exercise specialist, author and successful business owner has unlocked the secrets to healthy weight maintenance not only for life but during the especially crucial time of pregnancy. A Healthy Pregnancy Nutrition For A Healthy Mother And Baby
Posted by: | CommentsHealthy pregnancy nutrition is very important. Safe and healthy eating habits maintain good health and provide nutrition for the growing fetus. Thus it is a must to maintain a balanced nutrition before and during pregnancy. A well nourished mother gives birth to a healthy baby and can nourish her child well after birth too.
Although, at times during the initial period of pregnancy, it is difficult to maintain any diet because of nausea and morning sickness, but after this phase passes, with the growth of baby in the fetus, the nutrition needs also increase. Thus, a nutritious diet, rich in fiber, carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins, minerals is advisable for the healthy development of the growing baby.
Nutritional Supplements
Before you decide on taking pregnancy supplements, it is important to point out that such supplements must be taken under medical guidance of the doctor, as their incorrect dosage may affect the developing baby. For example some of the vitamins and minerals, e.g. folic acid and iron, if taken during the initial three months of conception, prove to be very effective during pregnancy. Such supplements are prescribed as a little higher dose, keeping in mind the pregnant woman requirements. A doctor should always be consulted in case of any doubt about the dose or its suitability during pregnancy. Further, it is also prudent to purchase the vitamins from a reputed retail chemist shop that can be trusted for quality.
Fish oil given for pregnancy nutrition helps form a healthy brain and body of the developing baby, since it is contains high levels of omega3 fatty acids. However, different types of fish oil are available in the market, some even with a high level of mercury content. Hence ask your doctor what to do; he knows what best for you.
Herbal supplements as pregnancy nutrition are also in demand. Some herbs are not nutritious at all. Instead they are toxic and may cause harm, if consumed during pregnancy. Some herbs and herbal supplements if taken in tea or as food flavors are safe, but their concentrated doses or pills should be avoided during pregnancy.
A Healthy Diet And Lifestyle
Always remember, healthy people have a healthy pregnancy. Thus, both the parents must eat the nutritious diet before planning to have a baby. Alcohol, tobacco, drugs etc. should be avoided and the medical tests, as recommended by the doctor, must be taken. Useful and healthy pregnancy nutrition guidelines explaining height, weight, diet, etc., during pregnancy should be clearly understood. It is also advisable to maintain the habit of drinking at least eight glasses of water every day during pregnancy week by week. Apart from this keep relaxed, cheerful, and have a happy spirit of mind with a smiling attitude. Avoid anger, bitterness, and pessimistic nature to keep your pregnancy healthy. Listening to music, going for a walk, reading healthy pregnancy books are some of the activities that relaxes the mind and body during pregnancy.
Pregnancy nutrition is important in all the three trimesters as your pregnancy week by week progresses. Read pregnancy books and take pregnancy supplements after consulting your doctor.

Pregnancy Trimester: Stages of Pregnancy for Mother and Fetus
Posted by: | CommentsPregnancy trimesters are the three stages of the normal 40 weeks pregnancy divided into three months each. These stages of pregnancy are crucial both for the mother and for the child. The mother experiences many physical and emotional changes as she nurtures a new life inside her. Similarly the baby develops gradually in its first home-womb of the mother.
First Trimester Pregnancy
First pregnancy trimester is marked from conception to 12 or 14 weeks from the last normal menstrual cycle. During this stage a woman often experiences morning sickness (vomiting and nausea}, tiredness, tender breast and frequent urination. It is recommended to take small frequent meals to prevent nausea. You may have alternate periods of activity and rest. Walking is the best exercise at this stage.
Changes In Baby
The embryo’s eyes, ears, nose and digestive system begin to form in this stage of pregnancy. The heart starts beating. The embryo is about 2.5 cm long and weighs 2g.
Second Trimester Pregnancy
Beginning of the fourth month marks the second pregnancy trimester. At this stage of pregnancy, you may regain your lost energy as morning sickness disappears. You may notice increased vaginal discharge due to hormonal changes in body. Braxton Hicks contractions, which are contractions and relaxation of the uterus, which is often misunderstood as false labor contractions, are experienced. Low back pain and swelling of the feet and ankles may occur. Mild yogic exercises under the supervision of the trainer may help relieve the problem. Kegel exercise i.e. tightening the muscle around the vagina and anus should be done in this stage of pregnancy. This would tone and strengthen the pelvic muscles that take part during the labor contractions. Stretch marks-a great sign of worry for the-to-be moms may be visible. Avoid itching the abdominal area to reduce the chances of pregnancy stretch marks.
Changes In Baby
Moms can feel excited during this pregnancy trimester as the movements of the baby starts with the development of muscles. Fingernails and toenails appear and the heart is completely developed. A small amount of hair appears on the baby’s head, eyebrows and eyelashes emerge. Baby weighs about 300gm and is 10 inches long.
Third Trimester of Pregnancy
This is the last of the pregnancy trimesters that extends from 28 –40 weeks. The mothers may have sleepless nights thinking of the arrival of their newborn and of the pain they may undergo during child birth. Braxton Hicks contractions become intense in this stage of pregnancy. You may feel tired and short of breath due to increased growth of the fetus.
Changes In Baby
Baby attains its full size and weight at the end of this trimester, which is 16inches and 2100g for a healthy baby. The organs and systems are fully matured.
In the course of the three pregnancy trimesters, the baby grows from a fetus to a human with all its systems developed in miniature. This is the miracle of birth.
Pregnancy trimester is a period of three months. Pregnancy period for humans is divided into three trimesters of three month each.
