By: Varadharajan R

It is most important that you pay special care for pregnancy healthy eating, because knowing what to eat during pregnancy can add better things for you. You are eating healthy diet means your baby is also getting healthy during your pregnancy. You have to manage your pregnancy by eating healthy diet, and if necessary nutritious diet with multivitamin or prenatal vitamin as prescribed by your doctor. If you are already having a constant care for pregnancy and healthy eating, you need to make only a few changes in your menu to compensate your needs. It is more important to care what you are eating than how much. What you eat right before and during your pregnancy can affect the health of your growing baby.

No doubt, you need nutrition during pregnancy to keep you and your baby healthy. But, it doesn’t mean that you are to double the intake quantity of food. An extra calorie may be sufficient to add with your usual intake of food. Care should be given to get the required amount of vitamins, proteins and other minerals. Low calorie diets will affect the baby leading to mental retardation. According to research report of American Dietetic Association, a woman with early signs of pregnancy needs only an extra 300 calories per day more than what she was taking before pregnancy.

Pregnancy tips: how to beat swine flu

By: Eddy R
Posted: Dec 09, 2009

A pregnant woman is more exposed to swine flu than the general population for her immune system is weakened, therefore more vulnerable. Like the seasonal influenza, swine flu could favor the occurrence of pulmonary complications in a future mother with a body already sensitized.

Some metabolisms are more susceptible to attacks of A H1N1. Everyone may be affected by the swine flu virus, but the most sensitive are the children, elderly and pregnant women.

Fever, one of the symptoms of influenza, can cause suffering, but no risk of malformations of the baby. If, however, fever continues contractions might occur, which increases the risk of premature pregnancy.
However, influenza A H1N1 should not scare you more than another cause. There are means of prevention and treatment, even if you are pregnant.

Influenza A H1N1, after birth

Placing in maternity should be as short as possible, and after birth you should meet with the doctor in a private office or a clinic, avoiding crowded hospitals.

If the mother was contaminated with the H1N1 virus is contagious, with the risk to transmit the disease to the new-born baby. A person affected by influenza A is contagious 24 to 48 hours before the first symptoms and between 4 and 5 days after their disappearance.

]]>

Regarding breastfeeding is not recommended to stop in case of flu. Breast milk is not contaminated, but rather is recognized for the transmission of antibodies from mother to child and will protect the newborn from possible infection. If you can not breastfeed directly, extract your milk to feed your baby with a bottle. Wash your hands and nipples before each feeding or extraction and wear a protective mask. Milking milk will be placed in a sterilized bottle.

Symptoms of influenza A H1N1 resembles very much the classic flu: fever, cough, headache, trouble breathing, etc.. If you suffer from any of these symptoms is appropriate to ask for medical advice.

Treatment for Pregnant Women

Health of a pregnant women should be monitored carefully. In the case of the flu, the doctor is the one that will recommend appropriate treatment. In general, it may consist of:

* Fever drop;
* Fluids;
* Rest;
* Treatment with antivirals but only if your doctor decides that.

Measures to prevent illness

The influenza virus is transmitted by air, mostly through saliva drops or nasal secretions (coughing, sneezing, runny nose ). To limit the risk of transmission, whatever the time of pregnancy, is recommended to respect certain rules of hygiene:

* Wash your hands regularly with soap and water
* Avoid direct contact with any person:hugs, hand shake, etc.
* Keep a minimum distance of 2 m from a person with symptoms of respiratory diseases;
* Do not borrow a towel from the bathroom, toothbrush, soap or other item of personal hygiene to any family member (husband, child, etc.);
* Clean surfaces regularly contact: handles, switches, cover the toilet etc.
* Avoid going to places where there is risk of contamination: hospitals, schools, transportation, public gatherings etc.

What You Need to Know About Pregnancy Nutrition

By: Isabel De Los Rios
Posted: Mar 31, 2011

]]>

It seems like having a baby should be such a simple process, but your chances of conception are actually tied to a complex set of circumstances. Researchers continue to learn a great deal about the process of conception, and how big of a role certain factors play in fertility, nutrition being chief among them.

Recently, Newsweek ran an article that highlighted the latest developments that researchers have found linking pregnancy & nutrition. Most pregnancy nutritionists agree with these steps for increasing fertility and improving your nutrition. So if you want to increase your chances of conceiving, you should follow the steps outlined below:

Choose Your Carbs Wisely

Let’s begin by talking about your carbs. Instead of thinking in terms of low carbs or no carbs, you should be thinking about good vs. bad carbs. Studies have shown that eating a diet high in “bad carbs” (those with a high glycemic index) can increase your chance of type 2 diabetes, stroke, and heart disease.

But if you are trying to get pregnant, you should know that eating a diet high in simple carbs can cause your blood sugar and insulin production to rise too high, especially if your metabolism type is insulin resistant. This can cause your ovulation to be thrown off, making it more difficult for you to become pregnant.

Consume Good Fats

Studies have shown that, beyond a doubt, consuming trans fats can seriously impair your ability to conceive. However, that does not mean you should stop consuming fats altogether.

Healthy fats, such as those in organic butter, olive oil, or coconut oil, actually contain the kinds of fatty acids you need for a healthy conception and pregnancy. You can also get healthy fats from foods like avocadoes, raw nuts, and nut butters.

These fats have the added benefit of helping you to feel satiated between meals, which can help you avoid overeating. Obesity can also prevent you from being able to conceive easily.

Avoid Milk and Ice Cream

Believe it or not, you should say no to dairy while you are pregnant. Studies have shown that low-fat and skim milk can actually impair your ovulation. This is because removing fat from dairy changes the proportion of sex hormones it contains, and manufacturers often add other additives to make the milk or dairy product look and feel creamier.

These additives can also contribute to impaired ovulation in women. You can actually get just as much calcium from leafy greens as from a glass of milk. However, if you insist on drinking milk, try organic whole milk and avoid skim milk at any cost.

Get Exercise

Most experts agree that women who are trying to conceive without success should be exercising more often. There are a few notable exceptions to this rule.

Women above the age of 40, who exercise excessively, can cause their fertility levels to drop. All other women should be exercising regularly to help improve your ability to get pregnant. If you don’t exercise enough, it throws off your muscles’ ability to absorb blood sugar and to respond to insulin spikes and lows.

As we have learned, if you have an excessive amount of blood sugar and insulin in your bloodstream your ovulation is thrown off, which can lead to difficulties in conceiving.

Get and Stay Slim

Experts agree that having a BMI between 20-24 is the perfect zone for conception. So if you can reach that point with your own BMI, you should have a much greater chance of conceiving. Even losing just 5 to 10 percent of your body weight can be enough to make your ovulation more regular.

Pregnancy Tips – Should You Have An Epidural?

By: Susan Marshfield
Posted: Aug 15, 2009

]]>

When it comes to labor and delivery time, one of the things you hear discussed immediately is in regards to having, or not having, an epidural. Should you have one? What are the potential problems associated with them? Here’s a look at this and more.

The basics behind an epidural is that they can greatly reduce pregnancy labor and delivery pains. It is a form of pain relief that goes through a small catheter in your lower back. The medicine is controlled by a pump and delivers the medication on a regular basis as set by the nurse.

Generally speaking, but not in all cases, you will have the option of getting an epidural once you dilate to a 3-5. Why is that? Because the medicine relieves, and nearly eliminates the pain, it can prevent you from going further into labor. That is not what you want to have happen.

Many people mistakenly believe that having an epidural can somehow harm your baby, but this is not true. The only side effects will that you may get a headache or feel nauseous. Sometimes you may also get an itchy feeling.

The main concern you will be monitored for is your blood pressure. There is always a chance that it may create a sudden drop in your body’s blood pressure. If so, you don’t need to be overly concerned. There are medications your doctor will give you to alleviate the issue.

Can anyone have an epidural during labor? No, not all women can have one. If you are experiencing bleeding, placenta previa or fetal distress, you most likely will not be given one. With that said, only your own doctor will be able to make that decision at the time.

One thing is for sure though, having one is a blessing. For anyone who has gone through the process I’m sure you would agree.

Lindsay Brin’s Moms Into Fitness Complete Pregnancy

I enjoyed this Pregnancy Workout set. Most pregnancy fitness videos were no challege for me and I felt like I was not getting any results out of them, but these were safe and formidable, which was a relief. Having the exercises broken down by trimester was very conducive, and Lindsay was on target with what I was able to do at each period in the pregnancy.

Your baby is getting stronger every day and you should be, too! This next DVD introduces unique exercises to build lower back strength safely plus exercises to keep your body strong, boosting endurance and increasing muscle tone. Exercises are customized to the second trimester, and all about optimal strength in the abs and back.

The yoga routine left a little to be desired for me, so I usually just inserted my own yoga exercise for the one on the DVD, but it is probably ok for someone who does not currently do yoga daily and isn’t picky.
The postnatal boot camp dvd is also great. There are great amounts of various exercises and workouts for you to choose from and they are ardous enough to actually facilitate you get back into shape, unlike a number of other postnatal fitness regimens that I have experienced. Even though the regimens are ardous, she provides alterations to make things effortless for those who still need to work up to the advanced level. This is the greatest Pregnancy Exercise video that I have seen for pregnant women.

It is a well-known fact that we are what we eat. This is particularly true in the case of pregnancy foods. During pregnancy, a good diet is essential to ensure the well-being of your baby and to ensure optimum energy levels. However, if you inquire from most women, you will find that generally a chronic kind of fatigue sets in during the first or even the third trimester of their pregnancy. They feel sapped out and just feel like sleeping the entire day for no apparent reason.

Pregnancy means that you are nursing a growing life inside you. Your body has to take care of the wellbeing of the baby as well as sustain itself too. If you do not eat the right pregnancy foods, your body will try to sustain the baby at the cost of its own well-being. That is the natural law. Your heart rate increases, your basal metabolism rate increases to process food and nutrients faster for the baby. Obviously your body is hard at work during pregnancy which is the basic cause of your tiredness. However, making slight changes to your eating habits can help in preventing this onset of fatigue and tiredness.

People would often tell you to eat for two. However, you do not need to really gorge on huge portions because that will just give you more digestive troubles. The idea is to eat frequently and eat small. If you eat heavy meals, most of your energy will be utilized in digesting the pregnancy foods, which will leave you with little or no energy and cause fatigue. Splitting your three meals of the day into six small meals can help you to satisfy your hunger, keep a check on your weight, and have optimum energy levels.

Morning sickness is a common occurrence amongst most moms. Due to this, the majority of pregnant women skip breakfast in the morning and prefer just coffee and toast. Coffee and toast are not the right kind of pregnancy foods since they will mask your hunger and prevent the assimilation of the right nutrients. The word “breakfast” means breaking your fast after about six hours of eating nothing. If you skip on breakfast, you will suffer from low energy levels and your blood sugar levels will dip which can cause problems for your baby. If you do not like to eat much in the morning, you can try some of your favourite cereal and a banana. It will assist you in keeping fit and maintaining high energy levels.

It is the same in the case with lunch. Do not skip lunch since you will then be tempted to gorge on a huge dinner. This will lead to all sorts of stomach problems in the night that will prevent a good night’s sleep and leave you tossing and turning. Your lunch should have a balanced combination of all nutrients.

Choosing the right pregnancy foods is essential to ensure you and your baby’s health. Pregnancy nutrition plays a vital role in making sure your baby is the best that he can be!

The increased weight obviously provides nutrients for the baby’s development and also enables the mother to successfully breast feed during the early months of life. It should be noted that either too much or too little pregnancy weight gain could lead to problems.

The subject is quite complex and varies from woman to woman depending on a variety of factors.

In my opinion, from studying available information, there are still areas where there is inconsistent interpretation of the available data so it is important to get clarification from your Doctor early in the pregnancy.

Almost irrespective of your starting weight, the expected healthy pregnancy weight gain at delivery is between 25 and 35 pounds. This is because, whatever the mother’s starting weight, the birth weight of a baby born full term is in the range of 5lbs 8 to 8lbs 12 with the average being 7lbs 8. The mother’s pregnancy weight gain will normally be about 20 lbs with the placenta and amniotic fluid making up most of the rest of the gain.

But for seriously overweight women, the recommended pregnancy weight gain needs to be closely controlled to be in the range of 15 to 25 lbs by the time of delivery. This projected weight gain is substantially lower than the standard recommendation although the mother-to-be would still be likely to produce a normal weight baby.

The inference therefore is that a pregnant woman who also happens to be overweight is expected to ‘contribute’ about 10 lbs of the essential pregnancy weight gain from the ‘reserves’ she has stored away!

However, I haven’t been able to find any authoritative references to any need for an overweight woman to adopt a diet rich in any specific nutrients to compensate for the fact that the ‘new’ weight produced is actually considerably less than the total considered to be required for a healthy mother and baby combined!

On the other hand, the pregnancy weight gain range for an underweight woman is only a couple of pounds more than that for normal weight women.

This is easier to understand but I am of the opinion that the recommended increase for an overweight mother-to-be needs to be discussed in some detail with their medical advisor.

I would emphasise this point because apparently only about 40% of women get any properly informed advice about pregnancy weight gain. Maybe the other 60% haven’t been given sufficient preliminary information to enquire further but medical research continues to shed more light on the importance of the actual amount of weight gained although the linkage between this and the ‘quality’ of the diet is often not very clearly stated as far as I’ve been able to discover.

Earlier this year (2011), strong evidence gathered from several research teams working in a number of different countries showed that a mother’s diet during pregnancy can alter their baby’s DNA in a process called epigenetic change.

This sounds quite alarming to me and strengthens my personal opinion that the emphasis should not only be on actual pregnancy weight gain but also on the nutritional value of the solid food and liquids consumed for both mother and baby.

The results I referred to earlier showed that, depending on how ‘good’ or ‘bad’ the mother’s diet appeared to be, her child could have a real risk of accumulating body fat as he or she grows up.

The study showed that this effect is largely independent of the mother’s body mass index (BMI) at conception and of the baby’s birth weight.

To quote the report’s conclusion “A mother’s nutrition while pregnant can cause important epigenetic changes that can contribute to her child’s risk of becoming obese during childhood.”

Please note that this research does not talk specifically about pregnancy weight gain but instead considers the quality and type of nutritional intake of the mother while pregnant.

So despite the apparently simple pregnancy weight gain recommendations, just relying on staying within a fairly broad range of gain is, in my opinion a serious over-simplification and more emphasis should be put on quality rather than quantity which should also be linked to the controlled intake of vitamins, minerals and dietary supplements.

This article has only scratched the surface of what is a potentially a very important subject for all pregnant women.

It has been proven time and time again that a little knowledge goes a long way. The saying, “Fundamentals are the building blocks of fun,” comes to mind. Indeed, if people understand the principles behind something, they derive joy in applying such principles. Pregnancy is not an exception.

It can also be considered an art as well as a science and as such requires certain techniques to ensure success. There is no single rule on how to get pregnant faster; however, certain guidelines must be followed which are based on the physiology of getting pregnant.

Among the principles to take note of on how to get pregnant faster are the following:

1) Determine the number of days in your menstrual cycle. This information is needed in timing your sexual intercourse to coincide with your ovulation day. This is usually fourteen days before the start of your next cycle. So for a woman with thirty days in her menstrual cycle, the day of ovulation is day 16.

2) Condition yourself before your ovulation period. You have to at least prepare for ‘the day” about two to three months ahead of time. Same goes for your partner. Stay healthy by eating the right foods, taking vitamin and mineral supplements, resting well, and avoiding stress.

3) Condition yourself on the day of ovulation. You should see “the day” as fun and exciting. If you stress over it, you can actually foil your chances of conception. Get your sexual juices up by pampering yourself and bringing in your hyped sexual mode.

Pregnancy nutrition can seem overwhelming during the first trimester, when you are dealing not only with the emotional impact of having a baby, but a host of hormonal changes as well.

Most expectant mothers want to change the food for pregnancy they eat overnight, but making drastic changes can actually backfire and cause more stress than incorporating lifestyle changes slowly.

In this article, we cover the four basic facets of first trimester nutrition so that you can begin to make adjustments in your diet as you can, without stressing out over major lifestyle transformations.

Making the Switch to a Healthy Diet

In a perfect world, you would switch to an all-organic, whole food diet even before you get pregnant, or at least in the weeks after you discover your pregnancy. But this is reality, and making this transformation can be difficult.

You should aim for eliminating all processed and non-organic foods from your diet because they can lead to a plethora of health issues for you and your baby. On the other hand, this is not an all-or-nothing kind of deal. Begin by choosing organic and all-natural meat and dairy products, as they contain the highest levels of hormones and pesticides that you should eliminate from your eating plan.

Then try removing processed foods from at least one meal per day. Taking these small steps can have a profound impact not only on your health and wellbeing, but on your baby’s development as well.

Cutting Back on Sugar and Caffeine

If you are like most pregnant moms, you want to eliminate caffeine and sugar, and artificial sweeteners from your diet. But doing so can be difficult because our bodies become chemically dependent on these substances over time.

For caffeine, experts agree that you can safely ingest 150mg per day during pregnancy, so aim at first to cutting back to that amount. Once you’ve made it there, then you can try cutting it out of your life completely—but continue to do so slowly.

For sugar and artificial sweeteners, you’re in luck—there are a range of all-natural sweeteners available to satisfy your sweet tooth. Agave syrup, raw honey, xylitol, and stevia can sweeten your meals and beverages without the caloric punch of sugar or without the troubling chemicals that artificial sweeteners contain.

Dealing with Morning Sickness

The first trimester of pregnancy is notorious for being the trimester most associated with morning sickness. As your body adjusts to the hormonal changes of pregnancy, you may find yourself overwhelmed by nausea at any point during the day, though mornings are the most common time period.

If your nausea is incapacitating, you should talk to your OB/GYN about treatments. There are natural treatments available if you want to manage it on your own. Ginger is particularly good for calming nausea, but don’t indulge in ginger ale, which is high in either sugar or artificial sweeteners. Instead, slice some ginger root and boil it to make a tea, then sweeten with stevia and sip slowly throughout the day.

Eating protein can also help with nausea, though you may not feel up to eating meat while you are sick. Try a handful of raw nuts or a spoonful of nut butter and see if that helps to ease your morning sickness.

Handling Stress with Grace

The next nine months are the most wonderful but also the most stressful months of most women’s lives. As your body changes and your hormones continue to adjust, you may feel overwhelmed with stress. Try to find a way of dealing with this pressure that suits your personality.

For some, yoga is the answer, while others prefer journaling. One mother might prefer dinner out with friends while another might treat herself to a prenatal massage. No matter what the method, find a healthy way to cope with stress, and begin using it during this first trimester for the best results.
