Most women are still fertile for a month at least after stopping birth control. For many this time is longer. So, if you are not ready to conceive yet but want to in the near future, stop taking hormonal birth control and switch over to some other contraceptive.

By charting your cycles you will know when to have s e x and how to get pregnant faster. As a rule of thumb most women know they are ovulating by the marginal increase in their body temperature at regular intervals in the year – like once a month.

The position during s e x is another contributing factor when it comes to getting pregnant. Do not use artificial lubricants during intercourse. These lubricants have chemicals that can damage sperm and prevent pregnancy. If you need a lubricant ask your doctor to prescribe one.

Always remember that very few couples get pregnant the first time they try.

It is important to have a healthy body and mind ready for conception. This means reducing toxins and bad habits from your lifestyle. This not only goes for the female but also the male. A man’s sperm take months to develop before ejaculation and therefore a toxin free lifestyle is important too.

Most doctors believe in a holistic approach to maximizing a TTC couple’s likelihood of conceiving a baby naturally, below are a number of simple steps both partners can take to assist the path to getting pregnant. These steps have been developed taking into consideration generally accepted health professional advice as well as recognized health research.

1. Smoking
According to the Health Insite, (Australian Government initiative) smoking is an important risk factor for the three diseases that cause most deaths in Australia: heart disease, stroke and lung cancer. Smoking has also been linked to cancers of the mouth, bladder, kidney, stomach and cervix, among others. Smokers are also at increased risk of having reduced lung function from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Using tobacco has been linked to a variety of other conditions, such as diabetes, peptic ulcers, some vision problems, and back pain. Smoking in pregnancy can lead to miscarriage, stillbirth or premature birth. Smoking can negatively affect sperm and your fertility.

2. Stress Management
Trying to conceive can be a stressful time in a couple’s relationship. Stress negatively affects fertility in many ways. Look for ways to reduce stress in your life. Perhaps try yoga, mediation, swimming; look for something you will enjoy and that you feel is relaxing. Most importantly, fun and laughter will help with a happy mental state. Try and create a fun environment for sex, enjoy love making rather than focusing on it as a task.

3. Weight Management
It is important throughout all times in our life to maintain a healthy weight range. So of course being a healthy weight around the time of conception is an important step. Both being underweight and overweight can reduce fertility. Look at a balanced diet with lots of grains, fruit, vegetables and small amounts of organic meat and fish; perhaps seek a dietitian or nutritionist advice. Regular exercise combined with a healthy diet should help to create healthy body and mind.

4. Alcohol Consumption
Alcohol can affect fertility. The Australian National Research advises against drinking alcohol before and during pregnancy. Drinking alcohol can increase the risk of miscarriage and abnormalities in the baby. Alcohol can also affect healthy sperm so it is advisable for men to reduce their alcohol consumption.

5. Medication/Drugs
It is best to discuss with your GP or specialist about any medications you are taking that may affect fertility. It is also important to review any over the counter medications you and your partner are taking as they may also affect fertility and sperm count.

6. Other Toxins
Your home or workplace may be potential sites for toxins that may be damaging to fertility and pregnancy. Seek the advise of a healthcare practitioner to identify and sources and provide treatment for the elimination of substances.Workplace and home environment substances could include: pesticides e.g. DDT, dibromochloropropane, chlordecone, ethylenedibromide, chlorpyrifos (Dursban) herbicides e.g. Dioxin fungicides hydrocarbons e.g. vehicle emissions, benzopyrene, PCB chemical solvents e.g. xylene, acetone, trichlorethylene, petroleum distillates, paint thinners and strippers, glycol ethers found in paint, solder vapors toxic smoke from burning synthetic and plastic based compounds textile dyes dry cleaning chemicals lead, mercury, cadmium gasoline, oil-based paints, cleaning solvents, adhesives exposure to radiation can be toxic to a pregnancy.

7. Foods To Avoid When Trying to Conceive
Peas: A chemical in peas have anti-fertility effects for both men and women. Scientists discovered that the birth rate in Tibet was considerably lower than other parts of the world. The cause was found to be peas, a staple food for the population. In clinical trails performed in the USA women were given the chemical (in capsule form) found in peas and pregnancies dropped by 60%. In men sperm rates were slashed by 50% too.

Soy Products: Soy foods contain a natural source of estrogen which can be beneficial but if you are trying to get pregnant any excess in estrogen can cause hormonal imbalances. The result is often interference with ovulation and egg production. It is therefore wise to avoid all forms of soy foods when you are trying to get pregnant.

A vaginal infection during the early months of pregnancies could prove disastrous. This prompts the consultation of an Ob-Gyn before it can do any damage to the mother and/or the baby inside her.

Bacterial Vaginosis during early pregnancy is especially dangerous because it is related with an increased risk of preterm birth or if not, a baby with a low birth weight. Preterm premature rupture of membranes or the bag of water is also potential, making the mother and child at risk for other infections. Uterine infection after delivery may also result if the BV was left untreated during the pregnancy. And recent studies also explain that there is a connection between BV and second-trimester miscarriage.

During pregnancy, most of the normal antibiotic treatments are contraindicated because majority of these treatments have teratogenic (alters the normal development) effects on the baby, especially during the early pregnancy when the vital organs are being formed.

Clindamycin and Metronidazole were found to be effective in treating BV during pregnancy without the teratogenic effects seen in other drugs. Oral clindamycin is given in a 300mg preparation while metronidazole is prepped in 500mg. Both drugs must be taken twice a day for seven days to complete the treatment.

Topical medications applied during bedtime for five days are effective for symptomatic relief but insufficient in preventing complications in pregnancy. A contemporary study shows that with antibiotic therapy, the occurrence of preterm premature rupture of membranes and low birth weight are greatly diminished. This however, did not find sufficient confirmation that antibiotic therapy prevents premature labor.

Do you want to entirely get rid of your recurrent bacterial vaginosis and stop it from ever coming back to bother you? If yes, then I encourage you use the techniques recommended in the: Bacterial Vaginosis Freedom guide.

Looking at the pictures of all these new age ‘celebrity’ moms, I have been amazed at how well they all have got back into shape. It gets me wondering whether they never had to deal with post pregnancy weight gain issues. Maybe miraculously, they didn’t gain any weight after the baby. Doesn’t it get you to feel that you may be one of those ‘unlucky’ women who have generously put on quite a few pounds after your baby? Believe me, you are not unlucky… you are just normal! Getting into shape after pregnancy is an ordeal that every mother goes through – which need not be an ordeal after all, if tackled correctly.

When I was pregnant with my first kid, I had become a voracious reader on all the possible books about pregnancy. I wanted to know every detail about my pregnancy and what to expect. Each and every book promised that I would lose my extra pounds by just breastfeeding my baby. So even when I started getting real big towards the end of my final trimester, I wasn’t worried. I was confident I would lose it. How difficult would it be to lose a few extra pounds? I threw all caution to the wind and happily gulped all the ‘healthy’ food, convincing myself that all the rich food is for my baby.

Well, breastfed I did, but the pounds remained. Nothing changed, not my appearance nor the reading on the weighing scale. I am sure most of you mothers would be able to relate to my experience. To my feeling of being cheated into believing that getting into shape after pregnancy is just a matter of breastfeeding. No my dear, it is not. Then began my ordeal, which every figure-conscious mother would have gone through. Crash diets and hitting the gym with a new vigour. But somehow, the flabbiness does remain. The perfect toned body seemed a distant dream as I was not getting enough time to spend at the gym. I began my research on the web about the various ways of getting back into shape. And then I realised it isn’t as impossible as I felt.

You need not strain yourself; you just need to learn smart exercising. This prevents you from over exhaustion and keeps you energised to give your best for your baby. All it takes is a few minutes of your time, in the privacy of your home. Like I said, getting into shape after pregnancy is not an ordeal after all. You can try out these easy workouts, by visiting http://www.losepregnancyweight.org – Get ready to say hello to a whole new fit and toned mom by getting into shape after pregnancy

When following a pregnancy diet it’s important to try to eat a variety of foods. The best diet for pregnant women includes:

Fruit and Vegetables, preferably fresh. Aim for at least five portions a day.

Calcium rich foods – dairy products such as cheese, milk and yoghurt.

Foods rich in protein are equally important in a pregnancy diet. These include lean meat and chicken, fish, eggs and pulses (beans and lentils). These are also good sources of iron.

Starchy foods such as bread, pasta, rice and potatoes – wholegrain is better

Fibre – this helps prevent constipation and is found in wholegrain bread, pasta, rice, pulses and fruit and vegetables.

Not following a high fibre diet and eating the wrong kind of foods will not only leave you feeling bloated and sluggish, but this is what will be left on your body as fat once the baby is born. This will be hard to shift! Eating the right kind of foods will keep your energy levels up, sugar levels stable and feeling more comfortable throughout the day.

You should also try to cut down on fatty foods such as cakes and biscuits and junk food like hot dogs and french fries.  This can also help you to avoid putting on too much weight during pregnancy.

Remember When Pregnant: the food you eat is the food the baby eats! Donuts, cake, chips, burgers, french fries….would you feed this to your baby??

If you find yourself hungry throughout the day, the ideal pregnancy diet allows healthy snacks. It is important not to go hungry when pregnant. If you’re hungry, your baby probably is too! Healthy snacks to have instead include currant buns without icing; sandwiches or pitta bread;  chicken or lean ham; low-fat yoghurts; cottage cheese; vegetable and bean soups and fruit. This can be fresh, tinned or dried.

Taking the right vitamins and minerals is essential to maintain a healthy pregnancy and is included in most pregnancy diets.  The most important vitamins and minerals are:

Folic Acid – You should take a daily 400 microgram (mcg) folic acid supplement from the time you stop using contraception until the 12th week of pregnancy.
You should also eat foods containing folate – the natural form of folic acid – such as green vegetables (especially broccoli) breakfast cereals and brown rice.

Iron – Pregnant women can become deficient in iron, so it is important to eat a lot of iron-rich foods. Try to have some food or drink containing vitamin C with any iron-rich meals because this helps your body absorb iron.

Tea and coffee can make it harder for our bodies to absorb iron, so cutting down could help to improve iron levels

Good sources of iron include:

red meat
bread
fortified breakfast cereals
green vegetables
beans and lentils

Although liver contains a lot of iron, you should avoid eating it while you’re pregnant as it contains vitamin A which can be harmful to your baby. This also includes pâté which is usually made from pork liver. If taking a multi-vitamin supplement make sure it doesn’t contain vitamin A.

Vitamin D – You should take supplements containing 10mcg of vitamin D each day. It is found in a small number of foods but we get most of our vitamin D from summer sunlight – but be careful not to burn if out in the sun.

Weight gain in pregnancy varies and depends on your pre-pregnancy weight. On average women put on 10–12.5kg (22–28lb) over the duration of their pregnancy. If you gain too much weight your health can be affected blood pressure could become increased. But equally, it’s important that you don’t try to follow a conventional diet.

If you are concerned about your weight gain or have questions such as: how much weight “should” I gain?  Am I gaining weight too fast?   What exercises are safe for pregnancy?   Which foods should I eat?   How can I speed up my weight loss after?   Please go to www.squidoo.com/good-pregnancy-without-pounds for more information.

Any parent having a kid allergic to peanuts would know how difficult their lives could get along with their children’s’. Just as pregnancy bras differ in various ways from your regular bra, so too does the way it should be fitted. Here are some tips to help you find the perfect pregnancy bra.

Having been frustrated by inferior bras fit on many occasions during my first pregnancy, I decided to launch my own maternity lingerie company and I do believe I solved the problem! One important factor in determining the right pregnancy bra for you is to take the time to visit your nearest specialty lingerie store to be measured. After being properly measured by a professional bra fitter, it is now time to fit the bra.

Every pregnancy bra will fit slightly differently and not every bra will suit every bust shape, so do ask to try a few different styles of nursing or pregnancy bras. Before fitting the bra, lengthen the shoulder straps out right to the end. Slip the straps over your shoulders and whilst holding both ends of the bra, lean forward into the bra so your bust will fall naturally into the cups. This is particularly important when fitting your pregnancy bra as your breasts will be a different shape than they were pre-pregnancy and by doing this, you will ensure you are fully in the cup.

Straighten your posture and fasten the back closure to the second tightest set of eyes. All well designed pregnancy bras have six rows of hooks and eyes to provide room for expansion in the diaphragm, which will allow for the bra to be loosened (on average) one set of eyes per month during pregnancy.

Note: If you are seven to eight months pregnant when you are being fitted, the bra should be secured on one of the looser set of eyes.

Pull the bra down firmly to position the back fastening underneath the shoulder blades. Now lift the bust into the bra cups by using the opposite hand to the breast. It is important that your breast is correctly positioned in the cup and is not sitting under the band or spilling over the top of the underarm.

Note: There should be enough room in the cup to allow you to slide your hand into the upper cup of the pregnancy bra for expansion when the milk flow arrives.

Lastly adjust the shoulder straps so they give a firm but comfortable uplift to your bust. Your pregnancy bra should give you the same beautiful silhouette and support you experience from your regular lingerie. To see this for yourself before you purchase your new lingerie, make sure you try your own clothes over the top and observe yourself in the mirror. Gorgeous!

Lisa Ebbing is a director and cofounder of international maternity lingerie sensation – HOTmilk Lingerie.
